Greyhound bus travel with toddler?

I would love to start taking the bus again instead of paying exorbitant prices for Amtrak up & down the East coast, but am concerned about the logistics of doing so with DD. Has anyone done it? Can you strap in a car seat on a Greyhound bus? I'm worried about the safety of traveling on the highweay without one, and also don't know how I would keep DD in her seat for 2-3 hours.

Re: Greyhound bus travel with toddler?

  • Hi, I am lurking.  I have two god daughter's that fit into this category.  I have worked as a Greyhound Agent for four years.  I am a shift supervisor.  The only seat that you are allowed to take on the bus, is the infant bucket seat.  The convertible seats are not allowed, since there is no tether, or seat belt to safely install.  The seat would have to be checked.  There usually is no extra charge for the car seat when checked, because it is mandatory to have at the destination.  The fair for a child over the age of two is I believe 60% of an adult ticket.  The child has to be under the age of 24 months to ride on the bus for free.  I hope that this info helps.  If you are in a wheel chair bus, there is seat belts, in the middle rows. As long as there is no one in a chair on the bus, you will be able to use those seats.  If you are starting from the origination depot of the bus, meaning that the bus isn't traveling through from another city, you can purchase those seats for a charge of five dollars extra per seat.  There is no top tether, but it would work with just the car seat.

  • I would never take the bus with DD. It sounds like hell. She hates taking the bus here but LOVES the train. I really don't consider the Amtrak prices exorbitant, but maybe it's different here in the Midwest.

It's about $120 pp on Amtrak roundtrip v. $40 r/t pp to the city I go to the most from here and the last time I took Amtrak, I got a sound talking to about buying a ticket for DD now that she is over 2. I guess I will just have to pay for the safety, though.
