How much $ to resize rings? NBR, obviously

I think I got screwed. OK, I know I did. I took my rings to this jewelry store, where they told me it would be $20/ring to get them resized. OK, I thought that was a bit steep, but whatever. They sent them out to get them resized, and when I went in to pick them up, they charged me $70. I told the lady that I was quoted $40, and she said that the jeweler that they sent them out to charged $70. I didn't have the energy to argue with her so I just paid it. How much SHOULD it cost?

  • Wow!  That seems outrageous to me.  I got mine sized for $25 and that was for the set.

  • I am blaming DH. He didn't want to deal with the mall, so we went to this little boutiquey store that was close to where we were eating dinner. That's why it was so steep!

  • Oh yea that's probably what it was!  Well, lesson learned?  :)
  • I got both of my rings resized a few months ago.  They charged $75 per ring for platinum.  It ended up being slightly cheaper than $150 was all said and done.  I didn't think it was a big deal since I had them made bigger and they were adding material to the rings.

  • Did you make them bigger or smaller?  I know in my area if you need them bigger a jeweler will charge more.  If that's the case, I think $70 is cheap.  If you needed them smaller, it may be a bit pricey.  I think when I needed my rings smaller it was going to be $25/ring.

  • Were they sized up or down? It's much more expensive to make them a size(s) bigger.

  • I paid $75 to have mine sized up a half a size.  They also cleaned them and tightened all my stones.  But they charge more to size up, because they have to add metal to it.  Sizing down is usually free. I always go to little shops, and not bigbox stores in the mall.
  • That actually seems cheap to me.  I think we spent $75 for my engagement ring and $100 for my wedding band.

I know with my band it was because they had to add diamonds but this was a quote from the guy who designed my rings and always gives us a discount.

One more way CA is way more expensive!

  • When I got my sized down it was $20 flat and they did it in like 20 minutes while I waited.

I haven't had them sized up so I don't know if they charge more since they have to add metal. If I knew it would be $20 I'd get my ering made bigger since I'm just a few pounds too heavy to wear it comfortably.

  • White gold is more expensive to size than yellow, too since it needs rhodium plating. If you were going down, that's ludicrous. If you were going up that sounds about right, but since they quoted you $40 you should have only had to pay $40, regardless of what "the jeweler" charged.

  • Oh ok. They are platinum and were sized up, so maybe it wasn't so bad! Thanks!
