Postpartum Depression

Who did you talk to?

I was sent home from the hospital with Celexa. I've been off of it for almost a month, and a lot of my baby blues symptoms have been returning.

My question is, What doctor did you talk to about getting your medicine? I don't know whether to call my OB or to call a regular dr.

Re: Who did you talk to?

  • My OB asked questions at my 6-wk follow-up that seemed like she was screening for PPD. When I started crying while we were talking, she told me about the postpartum therapy located right across the street! So I started seeing a therapist there based on my OB's recommendation. But you can go to your regular doc as well. Since you're newly postpartum, I think you can go either route.

  • You should be working with a psychiatrist. Your OB can refer you to one, if necessary.
  • Your OB or regular doctor can give you a list of psychiatrists but neither will really be able to help in the matters of getting on medication. Make sure when calling for an appointment that the doctor is capable of writing prescriptions if necessary because psychologists will do talk therapy and be unable to write prescriptions. The list your OB and/or regular doctor may include both psychiatrists and psychologists.
