Preemies

cauliflower ear

did any of your premiees develop this? we just noticed tonight that our son has a swollen lobe and we are pretty sure it wasnt there this morning. did your dr treat it and what was the outcome?

my husband noticed it and said wrestlers and fighters get it from trauma to the ear. my son pulls on his ears alot, could this have caused it?

Re: cauliflower ear

  • It could just be the way the cartilage is shaped at the moment - preemies have very soft cartilage, so the ears don't hold their shape like they do for adults and full-term babies. If the baby lays on the ear, it'll get all mushed looking. Can you re-shape it with your hand? If it doesn't go away in a bit and you know he hasn't been sleeping on it, I'd give the pedi a call.

  • LMAO!!! I had a boyfriend in college who was a wrestler and we called him this behind his back. Awesome.

Based on your baby's age I don't think it's a big concern. I know that Emma's ears were pretty soft until past her gestational age and in the NICU the nurses would just reshape it :)
