Oh, no, poor little guy. Good for you for trusting your instincts and insisting on the x-ray. How long for the cast? Good luck, hope he feels better soon.

Poor little guy! I have not read your previous posts, but the same thing happened to me when I was 11. I fell playing basketball and cracked my wrist (the growth plate). I went to the hospital and had x-rays and they said they didn't see anything. Went to the pedi 4 days later b/c it still hurt, nothing. Went to a specialist 5 days after that and he looked at it and said it is broken before he even saw the second set of x-rays. He said that sometimes it take longer for it to show up in the x-ray of a child b/c the bones are still soft. I hope that he feels better really soon!
3 weeks in the cast. We got an xray Tuesday (a week after the injury) at pedi but pedi said the xray was negative. Specialist xrayed and saw it.
That happens more than you would think. A specialist is more trained in viewing x-rays....and often they won't show in a toddler for 7-10 days (until healing has begun). I used to work for a group of surgeons (doing casting) and saw this frequently. Don't be too hard on yourself or the ped - there won't be any ill-effects from the delay in treatment...and often a fracture is a quicker-healing injury than a sprain/strain (which could have lasting effects).
T&P that the three weeks fly by for you and your DS.
Well that and the fact that I almost pee myself everytime I jump on the damn thing!
LOL, thanks for the laugh!! And you guys are right; the specialist did say that oftentimes others miss toddler fractures because it is like looking for a "hair" on the xray. I'm just frustrated...and wish he hadn't been in pain that long. I *knew* that is what it was...because from what I understand when a kid that young injures himself, it is usually the bone. I just couldn't prove it to the pedi!
Poor baby! You'd be Ah-mazed by how many fractures go undetected...even when radiologists read the films. DH has caught many a fracture that had been missed elsewhere or weeks prior.
