If you have an SUV

and your SUV has a third row of seats, do you put your DC's in the second row?

Possibly a silly question, but I've never owned an suv before. My second row has bucket seats and "an aisle" so it makes it pretty easy to get to the back row. They're in the second row and I plan to keep them there but wondered if anyone did it differently with 2 kids.

Re: If you have an SUV

  • We have an SUV with a 3rd row.  Like yours ours has the two captain chairs for the 2nd row and then an "aisle" which does make it easy to get to the 3rd row, however both the boys are in the 2nd row.  If we have a 3rd, then DS #1 will most likely move to the 3rd row, he's been "itching" to get back there, but we keep telling him no, maybe onces he's in a booster we'll let him sit back there from time time, but for right now I like the convinience of opening the door and being able to buckle them in without having to crawl in.

  • We have a Volvo XC90 and it has a 3rd row. The second row is a bench seat type row so its not as easy to get to the back. We keep the 3rd row folded down most of the time unless we need to put someone back there.
  • We have a Sequoia with captain's chairs in the 2nd row (ordered it that way so it's easier to access the 3rd row).  Both carseats are in the two captain's chairs in the 2nd row.  Any extra adults that ride with us ride in the 3rd row (or I give up the front seat and sit in the back) comfortably.  If we ever have another child...DS will go back to the 3rd row.

  • Thanks!  I figured that was the best configuration.

Oh, and ETA, "Captain seats" I guess is the correct term over bucket seats!

  • We have a Volvo XC 90 and I currently have all 3 in the 2nd row. When DS2 was littler and slept in the car, though, I put DS1 in the back so there was no one directly next to the (sleeping!) baby. He wanted to move back up, so there they are!

When we take another child along, we mix the seating order up a bit. Also, if there is any fighting in the car, we have a different arrangement for a while to break any negative patterns.

  • I have one and never put my kids back there. I have, however, had my nephew's booster seat and he sat back there.
