when would you start to worry?

my little one is 10 weeks today. at last friday's 2 mo appt, she weighed 11 pounds (6.5 at birth). as you may recall, i have posted about how erratic her eating patterns have been these past few weeks. for awhile she was getting 7 bottles of about 4 oz a day. now she will only take 3-4 oz and 5-6 bottles. she wont really eat overnight, and if she does it's only an ounce or 2... so she averages about 24 ounces a day, sometimes a little less.

i just can't help but feel like this is weird. if she's drinking fewer bottles shouldn't she be drinking more PER bottle? shouldn't her total intake for the day be going up? she's peeing and pooping regularly and her behavior is well enough-- she's alert, she coos and smiles. she gets fussy and will suck on her hands but when i offer her more formula, she clearly wants nothing to do with it. i've tried feeding her more frequently, but if i do that then she will only take 1-2 ounces.

my husband and mom say 24 ounces is fine, and unless she stops peeing and pooping as much, or unless she starts consistently taking under 20 or so ounces, i shouldn't worry about it. part of me thinks this is reasonable, but the other part of me doesn't want to turn a blind eye to this. she's already on zantac for reflux and burping has no effect on her appetite.

Try weighing her.  Weigh yourself.  Then weigh yourself again holding her.  She's probably doing better than you think.  Audrey sucks on her hands a lot now even when she's not hungry.

You can always call the pedi and ask to bring her in for a weight check. I do it anytime I'm concerned at all about his weight gain, and at the beginning I was bringing him in every week.

My LO is the exact same as yours! He is exactly 2 months old today and he eats anywhere from 20-22oz a day (I keep a log of how much I pump and how much he drinks)... Last weekend I weighed myself and then I weighed myself carrying him and he was a little over 11lbs... so I don't think you have to worry!

When they 'come down' off of a growth spurt, they tend to eat less. At least that was the case with K. She never ate that little, but she was also quite a bit bigger than your LO at that age.

As crazy as it sounds, teething might be why LO is chewing and sucking on their hands. It also seems to affect their eating habits. It may be a long way off from actually popping through, but according to a dentist friend, those teeth start working up from the bottom pretty early in some babies.

i suspected teething a few times, too. she drools a lot and is very mouthy. like you said, it may be a while off but it could be working it's way up...
