Help with Canker Sore

So I woke up this morning and my upper lip was hurting really bad and looked swollen, I went to the bathroom and there are two large canker sores on the left side of the inside of my upper lip. They hurt SO bad I can barely speak or move my mouth at all.

I don't know how I got them, the last time I had a canker sore was when I was 12 years old and had braces. I just had a dental checkup in June and everything was great, I brush/floss three times a day and use mouthwash morning and night.I tried swishing with salt-water and then I put Baby Orajel on it to try and dull the pain but the orajel wore off after about 20 mins and I'm not sure what I can do to ease the pain, Our flight to california leaves at 7am tomorrow so I know I won't be able to get in with a dentist on such short notice considering this isn't considered an emergency.

Just wondering if anyone knows any remedies or tricks I can try to ease the pain. TIA

Re: Help with Canker Sore

  • I always use a salt water rinse, or just put a dab of salt right on the sore. I know it sounds painful but it seems to help!

  • Mix together a tablespoon of Milk of Magnesia & Liquid Benedryl.  Take a sip and swish it around the sore in your mouth.  It coats/numbs it, super relief.

  • You can also go to the store and buy something called "kanka soft brush gel".  I used it and it worked wonders!

  • No advice for dealing with it now--I have a prescription med for it. But in terms of prevention, SLS which is found in most toothpastes can be a trigger for canker sores. Toms of Maine is one of the few brands that makes SLS-free TPs (not any ToM, you'll have to look for the SLS-free kind specifically). Also, I don't think mouthwash will help. That will just further irritate it. If you are concerned about keeping in clean, swish with salt water or hydrogen peroxide.
  • I don't have much to add beyond everyone's comments. Diluted hydrogen peroxide seems to work the best for me. I get them really bad when I am not pregnant and often I find that something triggers them. Sometimes too much acid in my diet or stress.
