Anyone ever have hives?

I have them right now and talk about a PITA!  They keep disappearing and reappearing.  If you've had them when do they go away for good?  It's been 2.5 days now.

The kicker...I had a dermatology appointment on Tuesday for a mole check and when I took off my pants that's when I noticed this rash all over both my thighs (that has since spread all over my legs, adomen, and arms).  I asked the doctor to look at it and he just said it looked welpy like I had been bitten.  He didn't say anything else about it but just gave me some topical cream samples.  I work at a different hospital and asked one of the charge nurses to look at it the next day and she immediately said I had hives.  Don't think I'll be going back to that dermatologist!

Re: Anyone ever have hives?

  • take benadryl.  You need to figure out what's causing them or they'll keep coming back.

And then take stock in anything that's changed recently.  Laundry detergents, soaps, lotions, bug sprays, anything.  Eliminate anything new.

    Also, new foods, meds, etc.

  • I get them all the time and benadryl is my best friend lol!  Sometimes they go away immediately other times it comes & goes for several days.  But definitely take some benadryl and put some hydrocortisone cream on it.

  • Ugh, I get them a few times a year.  Benadryl is best for mine.  Sometimes it takes a week for them to totally go away.  Sorry!

  • I'm nursing so I can't take Benadryl.  I have to work at keeping my supply up as it is so I can't take anything that would potentially dry it up like Benadryl.  Sucks.

I stopped using a new soap I just bought as that is the only thing new that I have used.  I hope it goes away soon...it is soooo itchy!!!

  • That sucks!  Maybe the Bendaryl cream would be okay?  Or maybe take a half dose and make a point to drink lots of water and eat oatmeal?

I hope you feel better soon!

  • I get them from time to time, but I had a really bad outbreak around my chests/bra area/armpits in January that took 2 weeks and a round of steriods to clear up. They were awful, itchy and painful.

ETA: I find that hydrocortisone cream worked pretty well on mine (at least when they were mild)

  • I can't remember, but can you take Zyrtec? I can't take Benadryl since it knocks me out!
  • Any allergy medication should help it, but it really depends.  I got them as a kid and we found out I was allergic to our dog.

But about 2 years ago, after TB was born, I got a MAJOR case of them.  I hesitated to do any allergy meds b/c I was BF'ing, but it became insane; they covered me head to toe, and swelled my eyes shut.  I thought I had somehow become allergic to BF'ing because it seemed worse after nursing and/or pumping.

I finally went to an asthma specialist/allergist, and as soon as he heard me, instead of looking at my hives, he said I had asthma (I was having a coughing fit at the moment, and was wheezing, which I didn't even associate with anything of consequence).  He said my asthma was causing my hives.  Totally weird.  He put me on an inhaler, and after a month, my coughing stopped, but more importantly, as soon as I started on the inhaler, my hives went away.

I never thought those two could be related.  Anyway, if they don't away soon, I'd go see an allergist.
