Re: ??? Weekly Check-in ???

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 10w1d

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?  So far so good!  I have gone 10 wks with nothing other than being super tired, but that's kinda going away...unless I'm just getting used to it. ;)  Nothing feels real at this point.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?  I go in tomorrow for my 10 week appointment to hopefully hear the heartbeat.  Crossing my fingers I get to!

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?  Still keeping this huge news to just the two of us.  It's just killing me!  Oh, and trying to shake this awful cold I have :(  I feel way better than last week, but everything is still lingering.  Yuck!

    (5) How far apart do you want your kids? Why?  This one will be the only LO I think.  DH has a 15 year old daughter so it's already a huge age gap right there.  If I can successfully have 1 LO I will be one happy girl :)

    (6) How did you/do you plan to choose your pediatrician?  This is a great question that I can't wait to hear what others say!

The hospital I'm giving birth at has a pediatrics office that just opened last month by our house so I plan to ask my doctor tomorrow how soon I need to get on that.  This hospital supposedly is the best in the state as far as children's care and birthing is concerned so I was thrilled to see this office open so close to my house.  Otherwise it's downtown, which is 30 minutes away.  What do I do, just call the office and register my unborn child???  It seems so weird to me.

  • 1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 4.5 months.

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Will rolled over from front to back! Both boys have rolled back to front, but for some reason neither had rolled front to back (which is easier???) until now.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Let's see...I'm getting Mirena on 21st, and Will has a physio appointment the following week. That's it!

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? Struggling with constant pain in my stomach muscles, only to discover that I have an umbilical hernia. Good times...

    (5) How far apart do you want your kids? Why? 2 minutes suits me fine. Stick out tongue We don't plan on having any more, but if we only had one child we'd shoot for about 2 years apart. That's how far apart my older sister and I are and I think it's ideal - my younger brother and I are 5 years apart, and I think that's a bit too much.

    (6) How did you/do you plan to choose your pediatrician? We didn't. Pediatricians work differently in the USA - you take your baby to your usual family GP for most things (like if they have a cold or whatever), and if the problem is severe or complicated, they'll refer you on to a Pedi.

    (7) Mamas:  How did you know you were in labor? I was induced, and the gel started working within 10 minutes. 1 min long contractions, 2 min apart, for 22 hours? Yup, I knew. Stick out tongue

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? okay.  tired.  never enough sleep.  baby shower was sunday!  it was great Smile

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? next tuesday, regular appt

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? Sleep...and starting to get back pains.  and the maternity jeans i'm wearing today are too tight (wtf?) - i'm sitting at my desk (at work) with them unbuttoned and unzipped.  don't mind me, i'm just whiny today Stick out tongue

    (5) How far apart do you want your kids? Why? 2-3 years.  my sister and i were 6 years apart, and it was *way* too far.  2-3 seems about right - we shall see Smile

    (6) How did you/do you plan to choose your pediatrician? I need to get on this - i plan to ask mom friends for recommendations

  • 1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 6 weeks, 5 days

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? I had my 6 week pp appt. this past week.  I had forgotten that I needed to follow up a bad pap with (yet another) colposcopy when the pregnancy was done (she didn't want to do it while pregnant).  I had three bad spots, so three cervical biopsies.  I should find out the results in a few days.  Hopefully I won't need another LEEP.

Henry also went to the pedi on Friday, though it wasn't planned.  He had a small amount of blood in his stool, and she asked us to come in.  It was probably just a little fissure, but we need to go back if it happens again.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Henry has his 2-month appt. on the 22nd = shots!  :(  But a good thing coming up is that my mom is coming this weekend for a visit.  It's her birthday, and she chose to come see Henry for her birthday!  :)  I'm excited to have her come, since she's one of the few people who actually helps with him.

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? Fussiness.  He's awake a lot more now, and that mean more fussiness.  Also, I struggle sometimes with what to do with him all day!  We play on the activity mat, do a little tummy time, and take a walk every day.  But then what?  I guess we just rinse and repeat, but I wish I had more in my bag of tricks.

    (5) How far apart do you want your kids? Why? Probably 2.5 - 3 years, ideally.  I think we're planning on trying sometime around Henry's 2nd birthday.  Why?  I would want them any closer than that, as I don't think I can handle that.  I would mind them being a little further apart even, but I'm already 33.  I'd prefer to be done well before 40.

    (6) How did you/do you plan to choose your pediatrician? We asked my OB for a rec.  She gave us a good one, and we did a meet-and-greet appt.  We loved her instantly....he demeanor, her philosophy, her location, and her hours!

    (7) Mamas:  How did you know you were in labor? Never went into labor....I had a scheduled c-section due to Mr. H being breech.

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?

she'll be 10 months old on Sunday! wow!

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?

i was having some pain in my hand - at first i thought i just slept on it funny (i like to put my arm under my pillow/head) but then i went to the dr and i have a ganglion cyst.  apparently moms who have just had a baby tend to get these.  so, i am going to need surgery to remove it.  will meet with the surgeon next week and find out more details.... i am hoping they can do it while i am awake with a local nerve block.

as for miss A, she is still working very hard on standing unassisted! she stood for 20 seconds twice and she has since stood for 10 seconds a few times :)

also having fun introducing new foods to her...the latest things she has tried are salmon, black beans, and yogurt.  i've been giving her bits of what we eat and it has been about a month since she has had any sort of puree.  i plan to introduce chicken soon, and will just cut it up into small pieces for her.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?

i have an appt next Tues w/the orthopedic hand surgeon to see about getting this cyst removed.

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?

trying to decide (after working interviews) which babysitter to hire to take care of miss A now that my friend/coworker has moved.  they were both good and also very different in many ways....ultimately the decision was made for us, as one person decided the hours were too long for her school schedule. so we've just hired the 62 year old lady :) she is great w/her and totally spoils her like any grandma would :)

    (5) How far apart do you want your kids? Why?

still on the fence about whether i want #2 or not but if we do, i am thinking maybe 2-3 years apart...though if 2 yrs then i guess i better make up my mind soon.  it is something i wonder about often, so we'll see.

    (6) How did you/do you plan to choose your pediatrician?

recommendation from other pediatricians that MH works with at Children's Medical Center. i had also gotten some recs from my local bump board

    (7) Mamas:  How did you know you were in labor?

i was constantly wondering if i was, b/c i was having contractions all the time and often 5 min apart. i went in to get checked and the ob told me i wasn't in labor.  i continued to have more contractions that day, particularly in the evening, and i finally knew i was when my water broke :)

Yeah, it can get a bit repetitive - but repetition is good for babies, it's how they learn. Smile

Do you have many books? You can get super short ones if his attention span isn't very long yet. My dudes loooooove reading time (we started when they were probably 6-7 weeks old?) - we have it about three times a day now, and it's entertaining for me as well as them. They have a ton of books so I don't have to read the same thing all the time, but they especially love the lift-the-flap Spot board books and the shorter Dr Seuss books (Dash is especially fond of Green Eggs and Ham for some reason).

Here's something I worry about.  I don't have a lot of experience with babies and have never been one to approach babies with animated voices and facial expressions, which I'm sure are both required when playing with, reading to and singing to babies.  I'm hoping that switch will flip when I see my baby for the first time.  Huh?

I hope this will make you feel better: I'm TERRIBLE with children. I know my baby hater status is pretty well known to you ladies lol, but a large part of the reason I've never been a baby (or even child) person is because I'm really, really bad with them.

I don't know how people do it. I'm just not good at that kind of stuff - it doesn't come naturally to me - and having babies of my own has been a huge learning curve. This is embarrassing, but when the boys were like 3 weeks old I actually googled "how to play with a newborn" because I had NO idea what to do (tip: talk and sing to them, and make faces - at that age they won't respond much other than just watching you, but they'll take it all in).

And I'm still not good with other peoples' babies, but I'm fine with my own. I've developed my own repertoire with them - and I still don't do baby talk. I speak to them as though they were miniature adults with full vocabularies, although I'll often change what I say into a sing-song rhythm, which cracks Ben up but the boys love it (example: "Hey my little little dudes / with the cool attitudes!"). Sometimes I make faces, mostly because it's amusing to watch them mimic it (you look surprised, they'll look surprised - you do a big grin, they'll smile back).

Reading aloud also helped me since you can make it so interactive by pointing out things in the pictures: "I do like green eggs and ham - look, he's eaten them all up! - I do like them, Sam-I-Am!"

But I wouldn't do any of this with anyone else's child, and if you handed me someone else's baby I'd probably still seize with "OMG what do I do with this!" panic. Stick out tongue

I usually ignore strangers' babies.  And I feel a little awkward around friends' babies.  But I guess it's different when it's your own baby. I don't think I'll ever be the squealy/baby-talk type, but I suppose I'll figure out what works for us.  Smile

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?  he will be 10 months tomorrow!

    (2) Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? He's walking if I hold his hands, and he's definitely cruising along the furniture.  I think he may be cutting another tooth too, with the way his mouth is like a waterfall.

    (3) Next appointment date?  12 month well checkup

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? getting him to go to sleep, learning the meaning of "no", and figuring out how to put the stupid childproof locks on the cabinets! LOL

    (5) How far apart do you want your kids? Why? not sure we want anymore

    (6) How did you/do you plan to choose your pediatrician? I *planned* to do a lot of research and visit doctor's offices, etc, but I ended up not getting around to it and choose blindly in the hospital.  Apparently I chose well :)

    (7) Mamas:  How did you know you were in labor?  My water broke. This is a great question though - I had wondered if my water didn't break, how I would know I was in labor, but it was easy for me to tell!

me too!!!  Lori made a comment in another thread the other day that got me thinking about this -

    imageMarried2MrWright:

I think, in general, people lose their creativity when it comes to playing with babies and small children.  Libby is in love with one of my empty shoeboxes...she loves it when I put her toys in it...and will spend 30 minutes just dumping it out, playing with the toys, banging on the back of the box like a drum, etc.  I engage her in these activities at first and then she'll play on her own.  Dads might need more help coming up with fun games like this...or being encouraged to put kiddo on a blanket in the backyard and let baby feel the grass and see the trees, etc.  Or take them to the local park and swing for 15-20 minutes.

I'm perfectly happy cuddling babies, but when it comes to interaction, my bag of tricks is gone in about 2 minutes, and then i just feel awkward.  so when i read lori's comment above, my first thought was - how do you know to do these things?  Stick out tongue  seriously though - does it just come with parenthood, or is this stuff i can find on google? Stick out tongue

right now, i'm just hoping i'll surprise myself and figure it out...

Yeah, we have TONS of books (we had a book shower), but he just doesn't seem interested in them!  I guess it's maybe a little early yet.  I do read to him almost every day, and if he starts to show more interest, I'll definitely do it more.   I have to admit, sometimes we sit outside on the patio, and I read aloud from MY reading books ("Moloka'i" and "The No-Cry Sleep Solution")!  It doesn't seem to make a difference to him!

  • 1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 14 weeks tomorrow

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? I think he rolled over yesterday for the first time...well unless the dog rolled him from his belly to his back:)

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?  he has a 4 mon check next month but I have got to find a new pedi before then I hate ours

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? dealing with my parents b/c they watch him 3 days a week they think they know everything and I am almost to the point only 2 weeks into this that I am ready to tell them to forget it he'll go to daycare

    (5) How far apart do you want your kids? Why?  he is it b/c MH has kids that are 19,14,&13 that live with us, so there is no way I can see anymore in our future

    (6) How did you/do you plan to choose your pediatrician? just randomly picked one in the hospital and it has turned out to be not the best choice

    (7) Mamas:  How did you know you were in labor? i didn't really...I had gone to the dr. that morning and was only 2cm but I started leaking that afternoon(at first i thought i was peeing on myuself).  After about an hour of running to the bathroom, 4 pair of underware, and 3 pair of pants I decided that it was not pee and called the dr.  They told me to go to l&d and then they decided that it was my water leaking but i was not contracting enough so the next morning they started me on pitocin and then I really knew i was in labor

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?

7 months and 3 weeks old

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?

Was feeling stressed about needing to find a babysitter for Libby (my mom left town on short notice and we don't know when she'll be back)...I posted on FB and MrsNFB messaged me with access to her Care.com account.  Our family photog (that has been snapping pro pics of Libby and did our mat shoot) volunteered to watch her for us!  She has three girls of her own and lives super close to my office.  Hooray!

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?

Libby got her flu shot on Tuesday.  We're headed to Seattle in October and possibly Vegas for Thanksgiving so I wanted to be sure she's covered since she got sick while flying last month.

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?

The whole "who's gonna watch Libby because we both have to work?" situation

    (5) How far apart do you want your kids? Why?

2-3 years...because I am not getting any younger and want to be done with diapers before I am 40!

    (6) How did you/do you plan to choose your pediatrician? We had planned to use my GP who does family medicine and opted to use the staff pedi at the hospital when Libby was born. She was so awesome, we decided to stick with her instead of going to the GP!

    (7) Mamas:  How did you know you were in labor? I was induced.

    (8) What questions would you like to see in upcoming check-ins?

TTCers:  Which cycle are you on?  Where in the cycle are you?  What, if anything, are you doing/trying for TTC success

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?  33w3d

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Feeling good.  I have way more energy this week than last week.  We also finally have a crib mattress!  There was a mix-up with the one we originally purchased back in May.  Now we just need some sheets.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?  I just had an appt today.  Everything is looking good so far.  Baby T is head down!  I need to convince him to stay that way for the next couple of weeks.

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week?  Finding a comfortable sleeping position has been a challenge.  Sleeping on my side causes hip and back pain.  Last night I tried using just a pillow under one side of my back, which helped.  I'm not completely vertical, but not flat on my back either.  My feet/ankles and hands have been swelling up a bit.  I wake up with sore, stiff fingers.

    (5) How far apart do you want your kids? Why?  2-3 years apart.  If we decide to have a 2nd, I think we'll start TTC when our 1st is ~2yo.  I'm not sure I can handle 2 children under 2 years old.  My brother and I are 5 years apart and I always wished we were closer in age.  We had difficulty relating to one another growing up.  We've only become close in the last 5 years or so.

    (6) How did you/do you plan to choose your pediatrician? We've decided to go with the same pediatrician I had growing up.  It's actually a practice of 5 doctors (all highly recommended by friends, co-workers and my OB/GYN).  They all cover for one another.  Hours and location were also a plus for us.

This is embarrassing, but when the boys were like 3 weeks old I actually googled "how to play with a newborn"

I can totally see myself doing this.  Got any bookmarks to share?  Stick out tongue

me too!!!  Lori made a comment in another thread the other day that got me thinking about this -

LOL it really is embarrassing to post this, but this was the most useful one for me, because it actually describes the "playing" - I use quote marks because with a baby that young, it's really just interacting with them, not what you or I would really consider playing. A lot of other sites basically just say, "ZOMG you have to play with your newborn or they'll be illiterate psychopaths!!!11!1!!" but don't actually describe what to do, which means that you're left in a sleep deprived, hormonal state sobbing, "OMGAAAAAWD I'M RUINING MY BABY ALREADY!!!!" Stick out tongue

Heh, I wondered the same thing before the boys were born. One of the things to keep in mind is that this really depends on the age of your baby. By the time your baby is Libby's age, you've been with them a lot and you have a much better idea of what will interest them, what kinds of things you can offer them, etc.

When they're first born, you're just frantically throwing whatever the hell you can their way, desperately trying to find SOMETHING that will work. Don't get me wrong - it's always a learning curve and they'll always surprise you, but for example now I know that Dash is most attracted by things like musical toys that make noise while Will really likes ones with multiple textures that he can turn over in his hands and put in his mouth. And there are more general things too - for example, most babies are attracted by light and dark contrasts, so something like the sun shining through tree leaves will fascinate most of them. But you really do learn as you go. Smile

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 33w4d

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Feeling great. We just got back from a wedding weekend in Aruba. I was so relieved the Baby J cooperated and didn't give me a hard time. My doc said I should expect to have some swelling while on the plane but thank God I didn't have any!

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Next appointment is next week and I will meet one of the three docs who are in the practice. Oh and during lunch today, DH's co-workers will throw him a surprise baby shower. I was invited so I am heading over to the restaurant in a few.

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? My left hand feels still sometimes. Maybe it's a sign of carpal tunnel?

    (5) How far apart do you want your kids? Why? Probably 2 yrs. We're not getting any younger and do not want to wait until later to have our 2nd LO.

    (6) How did you/do you plan to choose your pediatrician?

I researched online - yelp, local boards, local moms group. I narrowed the list down to two. They both have good reviews. One is closer and more convenient to go to but they don't have hospital priveledges in the hospital where I plan to give birth. The otehr one is a tad farther have hospital priviledges. I know it shouldn't make much difference but DH liked that they'll be there at the hospital to see the baby as soon as I give birth.  During my last appointment, I asked my doc if she recommends anybody and it turned out she is going to the same one (farher one). We were leaning towards that in the first place so getting my OB's recommendation made the decision easier for us. They have an open house once a week so DH & I plan to attend that.

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? He's almost 2 weeks old already! Can't believe how fast time is going.(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Going really well!  I love my LO so much and am trying to enjoy every moment.  It's hard adjusting to very little sleep, maybe that is the biggest adjustment?  It's not so bad though when MH and I take shifts (I go to bed early and he stays up later in the evening).  I'm trying to remind myself that time goes by so fast that I really need to enjoy the night feedings with my little man.(3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? In one month for J and I go back in 5 weeks for my check-up.(4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? Hmm, not having as much 'me' time.  I don't mind it so much but sometimes I feel like I can't just get up and go to the kitchen for something or to the bathroom but that's all part of being a Mommy :)  Luckily MH is off for 4.5 weeks so we're SO lucky!(5) How far apart do you want your kids? Why? I'd say 2 years apart.(6) How did you/do you plan to choose your pediatrician? He'll see the same Dr. as MH and I, that's what we do here in Canada.(7) Mamas:  How did you know you were in labor? I was sitting on the couch and felt a bit of a gush, nothing big but felt something wet down there... went to the bathroom and felt another gush as I sat down... it wasn't the big water breaking moment you see in the movies, it was more of a slower trickle at first for me, thank goodness.

    (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 6.5 mo

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?Jack can pull up on everything and everything - and that is ALL he wants to do.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? nothing - oh Jack goes to the eye dr. next week. DH had lazy eye so beyond just an infant eye exam being a good idea it's especially important for DS to go in.

    (4) What's been your greatest BR challenge this past week? my BM supply finally evened out?  I read that can happen between 6-9mo for ladies that had oversupply issues.  I come out just about even for what I pump in a day lasting for the next day's daycare bottles.  No more extra to freeze every night.  Which also means I need to be more cognizant of pumping at work (sometimes I would let 5hrs pass - now I'm going to try to pump every 3 on the dot).

    (5) How far apart do you want your kids? Why? 3ish year.  I want Jack to be in preschool before we have another.  Not really any reason, it just sounds good to us.  There are a few finacial goals we are working towards too which make that time frame work for us.

    (6) How did you/do you plan to choose your pediatrician?he goes to the same practice I went to.  We just looked on the website and picked one that didn't seem to be close to retiring.  So far it's ok, I don't love her or anything and will probably transition him to a holistic family practice someone recently recommended just because I like going to places that treat the whole person and where you spend the entire time with the dr.

    (7) Mamas:  How did you know you were in labor? my water broke.  Kind of a big gush - it was soaking cloth diapers immediately.  Waited about 3 hour (2 hours of mild contractions) before going to the hosp. - would have stayed home longer but I absolutely wanted one of only 2 rooms that had a tub.  I am seriously considering a homebirth for the next one so I'm not sure I would know when to call the MW, because my OMG this is painful didn't happen until it was like almost time to push.

this started happening to me too! I used to always have more pumped than she would take during the day while I was at work and I'd easily get 14-16 oz...then all of a sudden one day I was getting only 8-10oz! like you, I enjoyed having the extra to freeze and would also get busy at work and not pump for 4-5 hrs.... now I am making a concerted effort to try to pump every 3 hrs and it seems to be helping... I am not producing what I was before but I am consistently getting about 10-11oz each day now.  I know part of that is also that she is consuming less milk now that she is on solids, too....
