Curtains

I'm starting to look at curtains for the nursery... in your opinion, do you think heavier ones are better to block out light for napping.. or does it really  matter?  We have regular white vinyl blinds on the windows too.  I'm debating between sheer type ones or more of a solid color heavy style.   TIA!

Re: Curtains

  • I have sheer curtains in both Rowen and Phoebe's rooms.  I never wanted them to only be able to sleep if it was dark so I didn't want to get heavier curtains.  It works well for us.  I also have blinds in the windows and those are all we really need, the curtains are just for decoration.

  • Thank you for asking this Mel.  I bought medium weight curtains, but they are white and therefore do not block the light very well, so I was wondering if they were a bad choice.  I feel better knowing that it has not been a problem for Rowen and Phoebe though.  Hopefully it will teach our little guy to sleep no matter how light/dark...
  • Briley's room faces west so it was SO BRIGHT in the evening. The sun also made it really hot. The sheer curtains we had weren't cutting it, so we had to get blackout curtains. They don't make it totally dark but at least it is not too bright for her to sleep, and they help with the heat too.
  • Baby's room faces West also so we don't have to worry about the heat from the afternoon sun but living on the edge of the Eastern time zone means that we don't get dark in the summer until nearly 9:30 pm at times.  Currently we have wood blinds that have some light blocking qualities to them but there's still a lot of light in the room.  We're going to try those now and probably in the spring/summer put up light darkening/blackout curtains because when he's 2 or 3 it's going to be a lot harder to convince him to go to bed because its still light out.
  • Buy what you like, and if your baby needs them later, you can buy blackout liners fairly cheap at Target.

We HAD to get blackout shades.  Lil Miss' room gets tons of sunlight all day long from her two windows.  It really help with making nap time possible.

Now that she is a lil bit older and naps really well,  I don't always close the shades, because like pp said, I want her to be able to adapt.
