diaper bags and your husband/partner

I haven't thought a whole lot about a diaper bag yet, but browsing our FebMoms forum I've seen tons of inspiring ideas!  I have one question though.  A lot of the bags you girls have chosen are obviously women's styles/look like large purses.  Does your husband/partner care?  Is he going to use the same diaper bag or have a separate one?  My husband is very much a guy's guy and he would be annoyed if I tried to get him to carry something that had a qulited flower pattern or looked like a large purse.

Re: diaper bags and your husband/partner

  • I considered getting my hubby a diaper dude bag (I think thats the name).  But he doesn't do much with babies when they are little they terrify him LOL.  So he was never really going anywhere with a diaper bag.  Now that my boys are older and either potty trained or in pull ups I just send him off with a Zumba bag or one of the gazillion glaxo med bags we've gotten from my uncle.  But then again mine would make a joke outta purses/bags I have pictures of him walking around making goofy faces on our cruise a few months ago carrying a pink juicy couture purse.

  • I picked a girly diaper bag, and I think we'll probably get one of the backpack style bags for DH to carry. He definitely would not appreciate toting around the one I chose for myself!

  • Mine is a backpack style and although it is girly, I wouldn't say it's *too* girly. It's black and white with just the smallest amount of hot pink.

I have a pink backpack I take with me when we travel and more often than not dh gets stuck carrying it. LOL. He already said the diaper bag was okay with him. I'm a SAHW anyway so there won't be too many times that he's out and about by himself with just the LO, and for those few occasions he'll just use this one.

  • We registered last time for two different bags. We'll do that again this time

  • We'll most likely get one bag that is gender neutral.

  •  I'm getting a purse style bag, so I told my husband we could buy him a messenger type bag made for dads.. but he decided they weren't really his style. He has said he is going to use a black swiss army backpack we already have.

  • for as often as my dh is out alone with the baby-  it doesn't matter and he doesn't care.  Plus the diaper bags strap to the stroller so it isn't like he actually wears it over his shoulder.  I gave him a diaper dude bag for father's day 09-  we just sold it on ebay in june b/c he still had not used it-  too much hassle to repack that one when he can just take mine- which is so rare anyway.   for us anyway it was silly to worry about-  he can handle it for an afternoon once in a blue moon

  • I just ordered a LeSportsac diaper bag - my first baby purchase! I got it in black, but it's shiny, patent-like, so it's still kind of feminine. But when someone suggested LeSportsac on here I was immediately sold since their bags are so lightweight and also you can toss them in the wash. But I'm definitely left wondering what DH is going to use. He has a backpack that I have a feeling will become his diaper (man)bag...
  • DH's only request was that he be able to see and agree what I picked out for furniture and bedding and that he gets to pick out a diaper bag that he will carry. He likes the Diaper Dude bags and I'm o.k. with that as long as it's not the camo one.

I think it's rediculous to have two diaper bags. Then you've got to remember to stock two different bags and what if one of us drops our LO off at the sitter with the diaper bag, and the other one picks her up. IMO you only need one and it just needs to be functional (easy to carry, good pockets, etc.)

  • I got a black bag on purpose. We'll be busy enough as it is, so I wanted a bag we could both tote around without worry.

  • I didn't choose a girly diaper bag because I wanted DH to carry it as equally as I do.  He has a hard enough time holding onto my purse when I need him to, there's no way a Petunia Picklebottom bag would've flown.  We got the SkipHop Duo in a charcoal color, but he would've been fine with any SkipHop print too...they're all pretty neutral (and hip!).  The fabric on my SkipHop hasn't aged a day...I just cleaned it out in prep for new LO after carrying it every day for more than 2.5 years and it looks brand new!

  • Oooh, look:

They have it in backpack style too.  I'll get one of these for him/us.  But I still have my cute ones for when I want to carry a cute bag. :)  Or professional-looking bag (bc I'll be taking the baby to my firm's daycare).

  • I'm a SAHM with a husband who's going to deal with whatever I get.

I've been through at least 4 or 5 different diaper bags since DS was born (and through DD too) and I never took into account what the bag looked like. DH has never cared though, either. If it has flowers and smiling bees all over it and that baby needs a butt change and it's DH's turn, he's going to carry that smiling bee bag through the place we're in to do it.

  • I promise you, you do not want 2 separate bags. You will have to switch it out every time you go out, and you will forget something. It just doesn't make a lot of sense.

My dh put it very well "I will be carrying a baby, and a diaper bag. Pretty sure no one will wonder why I am carrying the bag, or notice what it looks like. Pretty easy to put 2+2 together."

  • I don't need a diaper bag that looks couture therefore we are just going to find something very basic and gender neutral. I mentioned this to DH when we were walking in Target yesterday and he just said "Thank you". He thought I was going to make him carry around a very feminine bag because I would never buy two of them just for looks.

  • I haven't picked out a diaper bag yet, but I plan on choosing a gender neutral pattern, more than likely just your basic black. IMO, purchasing his and her diaper bags is an unnecessary expense. But then again, I'm frugal like that. Wink

  • Our neighbors graciously gave us an Eddie Bauer diaper bag that is definitely a "man's bag", so that why my DH can have his own to carry and then I can get my cute girly one : )

  • Why does he need his own special bag?  My DH uses a backpack.  Nothing special, and he certainly didn't want anything special either.  And by the time DH was going out alone with DS all he needed to throw in there was a Diapees and Wipees, some snacks and a water bottle.

  • we thought about having one for each car, but in the end it was going to be a pain to make sure that both bags were always going to be stocked and ready to go. we keep the bag we do use in the coat closet with DS's shoes.

  • We're getting a basic diaper bag that both of us can use. I'm not into "girly" bags anyway and we didn't want two separate bags.

  • My DH is man enough to carry  my floral Vera Bradley diaper bag!
  • I never thought about this but now I'm going to have to ask hubby what he thinks. I am pretty sure he'll be glad to go with whatever I choose. I don't want anything too over-the-top anyway.

  • I was thinking about getting the Vera Bradley diaper bag - upon careful consideration, though, I have decided not to, and go with something hubby can carry too.

I remember the days of changing my purse all the time, and I'd always forget I needed something in the old purse! I'd be afraid DH and I would do that when switching diaper bags if we had two.

I wish my DH was that manly! I think Vera Bradley bags would be where his manliness ends lol.

  • I have a couple different diaper bags when DS was little we had my Juicy one and a PBK kids one I switched between the 2 and Dh would use the PBK one. I did pick up a Diaper Dude one at a consignment shop for $18 a couple weeks ago that was brand new and I have been using that one for everything. Not sure how it will work out once we have 2 kids but for DS it has been great.

  • I got a great Coach bag on sale. Neither on of us were too excited about him using is so we actually ended up getting DH his own.  He wanted a backpack style one so we went to Babies R Us and he found a perfect "man bag" for $35.
  • We have a larger bag that is pretty GN and then I have a smaller one which actually is just a large purse.  DH actually uses both.  The small one isn't particularly girly, though - it has blue & green whales on it.  He generally leaves it in the car, though, when he's out with DS (DS is 2, so diaper changes are a bit less frequent and more predictable for him).

  • I have this one and my DH has no problem lugging it around (Skip Hop Dash Deluxe):

And I really like it. I'll continue using it with DC#2.
