Gosh I suck!

DH and I chowed down on some chili con queso yesterday from Red Robin and I just totally remembered my doctor said to avoid soft mexican cheeses. I feel like calling red robin and asking them if their queso is made with pasteurized milk but im afraid im being overly cautious.

Re: Gosh I suck!

  • Yes I guess that true, it could have been just melted cheese and not actual soft mexican cheese.

  • they probably made it with cheddar, only soft because they melted it. I wouldn't worry.  i think it's cheeses like feta and blue cheese to avoid.

Unless you are having them shipped in from out of country or are buying it from a local grower that uses raw milk, it will be pastuerized. Anything you buy in your run of the mill grocery store will be fine (if you are going to an organic market or section of the store, take 2 seconds to read the label).

    Thank you!

Yeah, the last thing that comes to mind when I think of Red Robin is authentic Mexican cuisine.

  • Red Robin totally does not use "Queso Fresco".... lol. I'm sure they use cheddar or some kind of processed, pasteurized cheese.

Not to mention, any "unsafe" cheese (feta, blue, etc) is okay if it is heated to steaming, as this kills the bacteria.

    Also- melted =/= soft.

But---but---but it's soft when I scoop it on my chips!  You mean I could have been eating cheese sticks, queso and pizza this WHOLE pregnancy?

You should make up for all your lost time now. Eat nothing but the remainder of your pregnancy.

Think of all the money I'd save on toilet paper.  I'd never poop again!

  • Eh....I'd say if eating Mexican cheese is the worst thing you do all 9 months, you're in pretty good shape.

Man, some of these posts make me feel kinda guilty. I just eat whatever I can....I see people freaking out over cold cuts, and I think of when I was 17 and pregnant with my daughter.  I worked at Subway....guess what I ate EVERY DAY? Indifferent

    I can't lie, I love these questions.

And, maybe I'm late to the brain party, but I just realized something. Why did the OP think chili con queso = Mexican? Not only was she chowing down at a RED ROBIN, but chili isn't a Mexican food.

Oh, that's right, there is SPANISH in the name. Duh.

Yes you're right, Im guilty of being too cautious, so shoot me.
