how many newborn diapers did you go through? or how long did you use them?

We just bought a couple more boxes of diapers (they're on sale right now) and  I'm wondering if we have enough of newborn or if we should get more to take advantage of the sale. I realize it depends on her weight and size when she's born but just on avg...about how long can we expect to use newborn size?

  • We never used newborn diapers, and Babytaffy was tiny (still is!).  They used 1's in the hospital so that's what we used at home.  We just folded down the tops of them to keep them away from his belly button.

  • A week?  Maybe two?  Both of mine were about 9 lbs, though.  I'm think we bought 2 boxes of newborns and then switched to 1's, but I'm not positive about that.
  • Natalie is still in newborns, and I think she will be for a few more weeks.
  • At least the first month with both of em. I'd go through 12-20 a day depending. They don't hold much and they seem to pee and poop all.the.time. I found that I could stretch it out to finish off the newborns or jump to the 1s as needed. I think I had switched to 1's then found another package of newborns and I'd use those while she was awake and put her in a 1 to sleep.

  • Not including the newborn swaddlers they gave us in the hospital we used two boxes (84 in a box I think)  We used two or three packs in the hospital including what we took home.  So maybe a month????
  • We just switched out of NB diapers a few days ago. So, a little over 5 weeks of NB diapers at 8 to 10 diapers per day.

I started with only two of the small packs of NB diapers (72 diapers total). The hospital sent us home with about 30 more diapers in NB size. We did buy a few more packs but probably could have moved to size 1 a little sooner.

  • We just switched to size 1 today. He's kinda in between newborn and size 1 but the newborns are just to small.

I'd buy more size 1's than newborns if your worried. I really thought I'd have a bigger baby than I did so we didn't really stock up on newborn sizes but more size 1's.

Plus I was dead set against using Pampers with dry max becuase of all the concerns with it but that ended up being what fit for newborns. I had to use it.

I thought I would add on to what pp said about Pampers being the newborn size that fit.  We tried Huggies NB because it was given to us and they leaked like crazy!  I hated them and didn't think I would ever use Huggies but now that's what I prefer.  Pampers definitely seems to fit snugger when I occasionally put him in them.  That's probably why the swaddlers worked so much better.  Just thought I'd tell you my experience in case you have the same one.  Good luck!

  • About 2 weeks and both kids were pretty average size, 7.5 lbs.
  • I think we used them for about a month? We used Huggies b/c they seemed to have a wider cut-out for the belly-stub-thingy than the Pampers did. So, for about a month, at roughly 10 diapers a day = about 300 NB size.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • We used them for a month but at 3 weeks they were getting small. We used both Huggies and Pampers without issue. I liked the belly button cut out on the Huggies better but both diapers worked well for us.
  • We used them for almost two months.  DD was a 5 pounder though, when she was born.  She's nearly seven months and is now in a size 3.
