Alimentum Formula Users?

DD was recently diagnosed with a milk protein allergy so we switched to Alimentum formula almost a week ago. The powder seems much denser than the regular Similac (smells like french fries left overnight in the car!) and I'm wondering if this might be why DD hasn't been eating as much. She's always been a baby who spit up but it seems like this just comes up easier - she doesen't seem like it bothers her but it bothers me! We have a follow-up in another week and the Dr. said to give it 2 weeks for her to adjust but I'm wondering what the transition period was like for others. TIA for your feedback!

Re: Alimentum Formula Users?

  • My DD is a big spitter upper.  We have tried everything including Alimentum, which we gave her for a week and she still spit it up a ton.  I told the doctor I rather put her back on the soy, which she still spit up, but not as much.  The doctor said that was fine because after a week she would be better if it was going to work.  There was no way I was going to spend all that money and it did nothing to help.  Our little one has had all sorts of tests including an upper GI and there is nothing wrong with her.  Some babies just have to outgrow it.  DD is now 5 months and still spits up, but it is getting to be less and less.

BTW, I find your french fry comment funny because my Aunt said DD smelled like potato water after you boil mashed potatoes.  She even gave her the nick name tator tot!

  • My DD has been on it for awhile now and I have seen a huge difference in her. She broke out in a rash When we switched her to soy. She also has reflux, so we pit a tsp of rice cereal for every 2oz in her bottle, per her pedi. She has been spitting up less and is all around a much happier baby.
  • DD has been on Alimentum since she was 3 weeks old.  She used to spit up every time she ate, including frequent projectile vomitting, but now it's just occassionally.  I use the ready made bottles because the powder is very thin and comes up easily.

And the potato comment is too funny - we say the same thing...she smells like potatoes!  Although DH swears it's cheese wiz...

  • My DD took about a week to adjust to Alimentum. She is a totally different baby...

I call her my little cheese head because i swear she smells like a chunk o cheese! But it's a cute chuck o cheese smell! MUCH better than the soy IMO.

    Good Luck!

Oh- we also got the doc to write a perscription for the formula, I have Cigna and they cover it 90% per my plan. It arrives in a months supply of the ready to feed bottles and we're set for a month! I received an EOB last week and my costs to the insurance company were zero. I called and verified and they said it was covered completely!

  • DS was on Alimentum in the hospital and hated it.  They then switched us to nutramigen and he's doing much better.  Both hypoallergenic.  If your LO has a true milk protein allergy you cannot use the soy formulas.  Nutramigen also doesn't smell as near as bad as the alimentum and seems no where near as greasy.

You are so lucky that insurance covered!  United Healthcare refused even though DD couldn't take milk based formula and had a terrible reacton to soy.  My pedi's office does give me tons of $5 coupons which truly help!
