Babies: 3 - 6 Months

clogged duct : ( how long?

I think I have a clogged duct.  My right boob never feels empty and it's really sore.  I EP, and I know babies are usually more effective at getting rid of this, but she doesn't latch or finish... (plus it's been about a month since we tried BF)  How do I get rid of this - I;ve tried pumping more often, but I can only do so much... What else can I do?  How long will this last?

Re: clogged duct : ( how long?

  • Pump and massage the area at the same time. Mine usually goes away with in a day or two.

  • You can also put heat on it when you massage. With a heating pad or when you are in the shower.
  • I have been Eping since my DD was about 1 month old. I would sometimes try bf, but she never latched on right. I have had mastitis 2 times now. Even though your DD hasnt been on your boob in a while, I would try it again. What I used to do was pump (make sure to pump longer than normal it takes a lot longer to drain) then put your DD on your breast- they always do better then just a pump. But also use heat and massage it all the time!

Hope that helps. It should st art to clear up in about 3 to 4 days.

  • I used to get a clogged duct on one side- I'm pretty sure it was from wearing an underwire bra. I only pump about once/day, but when I had a clogged duct I would pump and massage at the same time. For some reason pumping worked better for me than baby did. Also, I would try to wear a bra without underwire or just a sleep bra for a day.

I also try to massage a little after every feed or pump when at home to keep clogs away.

  • usually 1-2 days, any longer and you could be looking at an infection

I've found the best relief from taking a hot bath and soaking on that side, so the entire breast is sumerged in the water...after a few minutes I gently massage, soak no less than 30 minutes and then I pump...I soak at least 2 times a day when it is really painful

having the pump on too high suction power can also cause blocked ducts, so you might want to try a little slower for longer

    good luck!!
