I have been sick since Monday, major sinus conjestion and now today my dreaded month-long cough is starting to set in. Normally, I would go to the doctor and get a Z-pac and some Codine for my cough and it would go away within a week. Unfortunately, this is all that has ever worked for me.
Now, I have nothing to take that will help me and I just feel miserable. I'm tempted to go get some Robitussin DM for my cough and cogestion since it's on my doctor's list of meds I can take, but it usually doesn't work well for me and I don't want to take meds so early on and risk anything if chances are it's not going to work for me. I can't breathe through my nose and now that my chest congestion is starting I can't breathe through my mouth as good. This sucks!
Sorry, vent over now
Re: Being sick is the pits (vent)!
UGH! I'm so sorry, it does suck being sick (and being pg at the same time makes it so much worse). Make sure you keep the fluids going so you don't get dehydrated!
You can also use the neti pot - I'd go without the saline solution and just use the distilled water though, depending on how irritated your sinus cavities are.
And don't feel like you can't go to the dr - there are some things they can give you - I ended up with bronchitis and they did give me an antibiotic (and steroids for my asthma too).
I've been sick 3 times since becoming PG. Before I even knew I was pregnant, I had a really bad sinus cold. I was on a steady stream of Tylenol, Benadryl (turns out both are pregnancy category and Sudafed (pregnancy category C--should be avoided). But, baby was just fine.
The 2nd time (~9 weeks), I didn't go to the doctor right away (thinking it would pass), but the cold moved to my chest and I ended up with bronchitis. My doctor was worried I'd end up with pneumonia and put me on Amoxicillin. I'm not sure how much it helped because I didn't go to the doctor right away. It was one of those things where I had to let it run its course, but I'm glad we were able to keep it from getting worse. I ended up missing 8 days of work. He recommended this sinus rinse once my sinuses opened up, which worked wonders. I still use it every single day.
The 3rd time (~28 weeks), I went to the doctor as soon as I got that tell-tale tickle in my throat. He immediately put me on antibiotics again. This time, I was cleared to take Claritin-D, which really helped a lot! Thankfully, I didn't get bronchitis this time. Another thing that really helped me at night was using a humidifier and vapor steam. I only missed 6 days of work this time around.
I would have never guessed I'd be prone to sinus infections during pregnancy. I know it's scary taking meds while pregnant, but there are meds out there that are relatively "safe" and your doctor can tell you if the benefits outweigh the risks. If you can take care of a sinus infection before it progresses to something more serious (that may require more invasive treatment), I personally think it's worth it.
Oh yes, the throat tickle. That started for me on Monday now today it's all moved to my chest and coughing up a bunch of yuckies. I'm thinking if it doesn't get better or go away by Wednesday I will go to my Primary Doctor. I have already missed a few days of work this week so I'm thrilled that I get a few extra days to rest up w/out feeling so guilty.
I did try last night to put a heating pad on my sinus' and I did try to do a sinus rinse, but it did me no good since they were still clogged I don't know what I was thinking really.
MH is the one who got me sick by the way...that stinker!!! Next time he is sick, I'm telling him to stay downstairs until he is better.
