*eyeroll* Board bash

Re: *eyeroll* Board bash

  • LOL

What names did she post over here? I looked back a couple of pages and don't even her a post by her.

  • Isn't it the point to get honest, unbiased opinions on whether people like the name you have chosen? Or are we just supposed to cheer and squee because someone we don't know picked a name no matter how awful we think it is? lol

Hahaha! That post made me giggle. I do seem to remember her screenname, but I don't know what she might have posted, I think it's been a while.

Just once, I'd like to see a legitimate rant from someone that hasn't in some way been personally offended by our board. It's always someone whose name list we didn't like, whose daughter is named something we called trashy, or who thinks the letter Y is the coolest thing since white bread. If we are really so offensive to people, you'd think we'd get legitimate rants from impartial readers, but we don't. It's so ridiculous.

Not to mention, does she really think people are going to say, "only morons choose the name Nevaeh and your baby is ugly," to her face? Even if the statement were true, no one would ever.

ETA: What is with the Bump this morning? It's screwing up every four seconds.

  • Huh...I wonder if she's referring to the Sticky Note. I think people look at the few crazy posters we get here like Sasha and Purdie, read our responses, get all riled up, and then think we're a bunch of meanies. I actually thought the Sticky Note was helpful.

And I generally stay away from the national boards as well...I like this board because I get to talk names. I'm only responsible for me, and I'll happily repeat that.

PS--Nevaeh IS a beautiful name. I think people get all bent out of shape when a really cute name is...how shall I say it...overused. When I named my son Jayden is was one of those really cute names...I thought it was pretty original because Aiden was popular then and not many more of the variations. DH is Justin--so I took the J + Aiden to make Jayden....now...everyone and their sister is a Ai, Jay, Ca, Bra, Hay, etc -den.

So true. I hate cute names.

I know, cute names are the worst aren't they?!  I only like ugly names.

Of course that comment was coming from someone who named their kid Jaydon because it took the "J" of her H's first name and smushed it with Aiden.

  • LOL. I'm not surprised Jayden and Nevaeh's mommy's hate the name board.

I don't know why some people post here asking for opinions and then get all bent out of shape if they get any negative opinions on the name. Not everyone is going to like a name no matter what it is. Take it with a grain of salt people!

Yes, I would rather have a "boring" name than a super trendy, made-up sounding, backward spelled name for my child. Does that make me "mean?"

  • I also think it is pretty predictable that Nevaeh and Jayden's moms hates the name board.  Boo hoo.

This board is great because you can get unbiased opinions.  People are much less likely to tell you to your face that your name idea is bad.  And honestly?  If I met a cute little Nevaeh I would never in a trillion years bash on her name.  Do I like it? NO!  But do these women really think that people who think the name is trashy would say so to her face?!?!

  • haha I'm not even pregnant and I love this board! It helps me get ideas for the next LO.

If you come onto the baby name board expecting everyone to give you positive feedback about your name list, then you better avoid the board completely. Not everyone has the same style as you. Even if a bunch of people LOVE your name choices, there is always someone who wont.

Bring on the ugly names! :)

  • People who come here looking for an "unbiased" opinion will be disappointed. This board is most DEFINITELY biased -- you aren't going to get an unbiased opinion here. The people who hang out here are "name nerds" who tend to prefer "traditional-trendy" to "made up" or "unique". Lurk on this board for any length of time and you can see the trends (Jane, Elizabeth, Grace as a middle name, anything Celtic or faux Celtic, traditional spellings...) and if you don't agree with that, if you're the kind of person who WANTS to name their kid Nevaeh, you probably aren't going to get a good answer posting here.

  • Neveah is awful...  I don't care who I offend with that one.  And, any variation of Aiden is too popular for my taste; case in point: my 5yo nephew, Aiden, goes by his MN because there are too many of them...

I don't care what people name their LOs, but if you ASK for MHO I will give it to you.

  • I haven't been on here in a month or so because of vacation, but seriously? I've been posting here for awhile, and I've never seen anything "vicious." If you ask for opinions, that is what your going to get. You don't have to agree, but it doesn't give you cause to revert back to Jr. high.

  • *eyeroll* indeed!

As a general observation, I think the parents who go for "trendy unique" get the most bent out of shape when someone responds negatively to a name. Those names are also the names that often get the most opinionated responses. So it's kind of cyclic.

Personally, "Nevaeh" has absolutely no appeal to me. Phonetically, it sounds okay, but the whole it being unique because it spells a cool, spiritually-related word backwards thing is totally lost on me. To me, it just comes off as a bit gimmicky, and a bit lowbrow. It's like the parents are trying superhard to make their kid special, but are doing so in a really superficial way. Also, they are trying to do something poetic/spiritual, but the delivery isn't quite there. In that direction, I'd be more inclided to say pick a religious figure important to your faith, or one of the more mainstream word/names that are significant to you. A word spelled backwards... (especially when it's spelled wrong!) it's just doesn't come off as a solid choice to many people. A person can whine all they want about how mean everybody is being (except for all the cool, right people that agree with them, of course), but that doesn't change the fact that it's a name that many have strong reservations against.

I can think of tons of other NMS names, but the "trendy unique" ones really hit a nerve for me. Its like they are trying to be extrasuperspecial.

  • Well, someone who names their kid Nevaeh or Jayden has zippo naming credibility with me :P

I agree that there is a style to this board.

I disagree that the opinions are biased.

I give completely HONEST opinions.  They are not swayed in any way because I am worried about hurting my sister, best friend, or cousin's feelings.  I am much more likely to cushion a friend's feelings and tell them the name Alexis (which I hate) is a "great name" to avoid any hard feelings than I am on here.

  • For those wondering where this whole thing started, I think I have some insight. Here's the first part of her post in the December Mommies board:

    imagedeziyou:
I usually stay on this board, but from time to time I may lurk to 2nd trimester or Baby Names, and I am really amazed at how snotty and b****y those women can be. They basically try to tell people they are stupid for retelling a story that the person had no idea had been told before about a name. Oh well! If they don't like it they don't have to read the whole thing, but I don't think a person should be attacked for not lurking enough on a board to know better..good grief.

So my guess is that Deziyou didn't acually post names that we bashed.

I'm thinking that she posted the La-a story on a thread where we were talking about the worst names we've heard.

Then when she told us about La-a, someone probably directed her to the Sticky Note, where she saw the very first post from BraveAngel, which says "This forum doesn't have a sticky, but if it did... what would you say? ...I was thinking 'Nevaeh is almost universally disliked'."

When she saw this, she didn't realize that BraveAngel meant it was almost universally disliked on this board. So that's why she wrote this:

    imagedeziyou:
And one lady made a comment that the name "Nevaeh" has to be the most universally disliked name....That's my 5 year old daughter's name, and ANYONE we meet who hears her name says that it's beautiful along with her. Psh...shows how much she knows! lol
  • Wow, that was me on both counts - do I know how to piss someone off or what?

Eh, don't sweat it. Like you said, "Haters gonna hate". She would've gotten mad eventually if she lurked long enough.

Everyone bashes the name Nevaeh on this board. She just happened to see yours first. Likewise, I am usually the one telling people they are "banned for three fortnights" for telling the La-a story. I had just decided to take a break and let someone else do it that day.  And being the dedicated BabyNamesBoard Bumpie that you are, you took care of it.

    HAHA, sucker! Devil

LOL, the code for the devil emoticon is [ 6 ]! I've never used it before, so I'm just now realizing this.

  • I'm being totally serious: How do you even pronounce Nevaeh? I've never known.

I love it when people post here and get offended at any response that it isn't "ZOMG! What a beautiful youneek name! You must be so creative and cool in person."

I'll tell you how to pronounce Nevaeh, if you tell me what the Z in "ZOMG!" stands for! LOL. I've always been scared to ask, but since you were brave, I thought I'd be brave too.

It's neh-VAY-uh (I know, I know... it's actually spelled differently than it's pronounced. <sigh> It should be a clue about the type of person that originally came up with/continue to use this name.)

Honestly, I don't think it stands for anything, it's just a way of over-dramatizing the OMG. I think.
