Baby Names

Cullen

We just found out we're having a boy! We're considering the name Cullen since it is my husband's middle name and also his father's middle name.

We really love the name - my only concern is that it is a last name in Twilight. We're in our late 20's/early 30's and not Twilight fans at all.

My question: do you think it will matter in 5/10/20 years, or do you think we should go with the name we love despite the fad, since it's a family name?

Re: Cullen

  • No, I don't think it will matter in 5/10/20 years. I've always loved the name Cullen.
  • I don't think it will matter in 5/10 yrs at all.  Plus, it's a family name!!

  • It won't matter in a few years, but be prepared for people to ask you now if you're Twilight fans. Personally, I like the name & wouldn't make the Twilight connection, but then again, I'm an adult that doesn't obsess over books intended for tweenagers.

  • I think it's a great name.  I like using family names, and I've never seen Twilight, so I wouldn't have made the association.

Amazing! It's been exactly a month since we've had a "Can I name my baby a Twilight name?" thread! We were having them every couple of days there for a while. I'm so proud of you girls!!!

5 years- It will still be well known

10 years- people will remember it, but it'll probably be an afterthought

20 years- Only diehard fans will think of it. (keep in mind there are quite a few diehard fans)

But I don't think you're asking the right question here. If I were you, I would be more worried about birth-5 years. SO many people will say, "Oh, after Twilight," and you will either have to say "No, its a family name", or just smile and nod and know in your head that it's a family name. Do you think that will get old for you?

Only you can decide the answer to this, but here's an example of a bumpie who named their son Cullen and regretted it:

"Another Twilight Dilema: Would You Change Your Child's Name?"

Oh, and in case there is any doubt in your mind whether people nowadays will think of it, you can refer to this thread:

"What Do You Think Of When I Say 'Cullen'?"

If I were you, I would pick any other family name but this one.

  • Aside from the Twilight connection, I actually don't care for this name...it reminds me too much of 'culling the herd'.

BUT...if there was ever a reason to use it, and for me to back it, you have it. It's a family name that you both like. I say keep it on your list.

Harry Potter will live on, but Twilight...I think that will fall by the wayside.

    Congratulations on your boy!

  • Its a great name, but I imagine that there will be a hige spike in the amount of "cullens" born around this time.  In a few years there won't be as many, but I'm not sure that it will necessarily be dated.  I see the problem though- especially b/c it is a family name.  Woudl it fit as a MN with any others you like?
