I understand with this subject everyone has a million different views, but I thought this link was interesting as a mother that has struggled with night sleeping even before this dreadful 4 month wakeful. I personally will never do CIO, but it gives good guidelines as to when it's possibly acceptable. Good luck to all you ladies that have non-STTNer's!
Re: For those considering CIO before 6 months...
huh...thanks for sharing.
Well, hopefully you don't have to go through it. A lot of my girlfriends actually never experienced it, but I surely am, and it is SO hard. DD already got up once or twice a night, which is fine - my body had adjusted, but as of Friday it has been about every 2 hours from 7:30pm - 7:00am. I now totally understand how mothers get to the point of wanting to explore CIO after this experience!
I have a feeling that I might have "experienced" the 4 month wake last night. DS woke up every 3 hours to feed. Was not fussy at all, was just awake and wanted to eat. Crossing my fingers he sleeps tonight and its not the start of it. But like I said, if it is, I will just have to deal.
wow, that is interesting. this, coming from a person who was just told by her pediatrician (at DS's 4mo. appt) to let him cry it out & that he doesn't need to eat b/w 12-4am.
ALSO, statistically, only 30% of moms EBF at 3 months, so the majority of people that a pediatrician sees at this point wouldn't fall under this category. that's probably why they would give such horrible advice.
very interesting.
HSHHC suggests that it's fine for a child to wake up up to twice a night to eat until 9 months, which I think is a good middle ground.
A child waking up once or twice a night to eat and going right back to sleep is not a reason I'd think most people would consider CIO. When the baby is waking up every 60-90 minutes, it's more likely it's a sleep association issue than a hunger issue though, and that's when most people consider sleep training (no necessarily CIO, though CIO is one of the options).
