School-Aged Children

When did you first get kindergarten info?

Okay, DD doesn't start kindergarten until next year.  But I am such a huge logistics person I'm trying to think about how things will work next year.

Our current daycare is not even close to being in our district so we'll have all new before and after school care...which means I have to figure out when to pull her from her current center.  DD2 will most likely stay there because we adore the teachers, which means dual dropoff for a few years.

I'm thinking I won't start to receive anything until after the new year at the earliest, but this daycare switching thing is starting to creep in my head.  She's been going to the same place since she was 5 months old!

Re: When did you first get kindergarten info?

  • Enrollment began in the spring for us, when I registered DS they gave me a packet with the basic info and then closer to the start of school we received more detailed info.

  • We didn't automatically receive anything.  I had to go pick up a registration packet at the school.  Registration starts around April.

I didn't receive any information from the school about which class she was in until 2 weeks ago-she starts next week.

  • You should check with your school district to see when kindergarten registration is. It is usually in the spring. From what I understand, your district will not contact you, it's up to you to register your child.
  • they started enrollment in Jan/Feb and had orientation meetings for parents in March.  Lots of info about after school care was already on their website, too.

  • My children's school always has an open house in January and then registration starts at the end of January or beginning of February.  So new parents are able to get info at the open house in January.  You could call your district or look and ask if they have an open house and when new student registration starts.  You can also check their website.

  • Your school districts web site should have all the information listed.  We have an Information night where they go over the different kindergarten options (Full Day, half day, Chinese immersion, etc) in Nov or Dec and then Kindergarten round-up is in the spring, I think March.  We are open enrolling and the deadline to get all the paperwork in is in Jan or Feb and they start figuring out who will be in what class after that.
