Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Honest question re scheduled CS

BIL's girlfriend is scheduled for a CS on Friday.  She says it is because the cord is wrapped around her baby's neck.  The thing is, it was scheduled about three weeks ago.

If she or the baby were in danger due to the cord tangle, they would have done it then and there.  So if it wasn't an emergency, wouldn't have a chance to untangle in these weeks?

Also, she will only be 38.5 weeks.

I seriously don't understand but don't want to ask her and appear like I'm judging.

  • well, I haven't heard that one before but who knows what her dr is thinking...

Having had 2 c-sections, they are just no fun recovering from...not that with reg birth you have no pain, I can only imagine what your poor woo-ha feels like but I wouldn't choose a c-section that is for sure.

plus most kids are born with a cord around their neck...it is only an issue from my understanding if they are actually stuck in the birth canal.

    wishing them all the best!

  • sounds like what happened with my SIL.  hers was scheduled because of the cord being wrapped around the baby's neck.  saw it on the last ultrasound...only an issue for her because the cord was wraaped 3 times around the neck...too many times for dr to unwrap.  I think it's ok if wrapped once...dr believed the baby would have died or been in severe distress during delivery...believed it is okay in utero to have it wrapped though

  • 37 weeks is full term.  38.5 weeks is not considered an early delivery, especially for a scheduled c-section, which is usually done at 39 weeks unless there is a medical reason why it should be done sooner(as it appears that her Dr thinks this is).  They don't want to take the chance of the mother going into labor and putting the baby in distress, that is why its done before 40 weeks.

yes 37 weeks is considered full term because everything is developed at that point but that doesn't mean babies need to come out that early.

To the OP If her Dr. thinks  that is what she needs then if she trusts him/her then I wouldn't stick my nose in. But if I was her I would get another u/s and check the cord again and ask him the reasons behind him wanting to have an elective section

Which is why I asked interweb strangers and not her.

My SIL found out early that my nephew's cord was wrapped around 3 times.  They did not rush to a c/s.  She did have to go in 3 times a week to have u/s to make sure baby was not in distress.  It was a very tense 6 weeks but baby was fine and healthy!
