I walked into my classroom today at the beginning of second bell and stepped directly into a chair - wearing sandals! Now the side of my foot and toe are red, black, blue, and swollen! Ugh!

Ouch! I broke a toe good a few years ago. Stubbed it on my futon and actually heard the crack...ick. And it hurt like a mother.
I got an xray and they taped it and gave me a cool little shoe that made it MUCH easier and pain-free to walk. It was painful to walk before the shoe. Maybe you should see a doc?
Feel better!
ETA: You should probably get an xray if you're in pain, now that I think of it. My MIL broke her fourth metatarsal in her foot last December and it took forever to heal. It's a bad bone to break and can lead to surgery later on if it's not taken care of, apparently. She was given all sorts of strict doctor's orders.
I broke my little toe about 6 years ago. When I went to the Dr. to have it looked at they told me it was broken, take it to the next toe and it will heal. About 6 months later I barely touched it on a chair and it broke again, I went to another Dr. explained what happened and was told to tape it again. This happened a total of 5 times before a Dr. would take me seriously and do something other than tape it. A sports specialist Dr. looked at the x-ray and said that I had torn the ligaments and the toe had been dislocated the whole time and couldn't heal on it's own.
I hope this isn't your case, but if it doesn't heal like it should go to a specialist right away!
