S/O Mirage's post

What is so wrong with wanting to provide food in lieu of money?  It sounded as if some people thought people shouldn't care where the money went and that it was wrong to give food.  (I read that post while trying to clean so I could totally be misinterpreting things)

I just don't understand why not wanting the money to go towards something destructive is a bad thing

Re: S/O Mirage's post

  • There is nothing wrong with giving food. I took issue with the attitude that money will probably go to drugs and alcohol or that its probably a scam.

Not wrong to give food, Ive done that. I just can't imagine wasting my time judging/assuming/stressing over wheter my $1 goes towards booze.

But, like I said, I"ve give food. When I lived in bmore, for example, I used to bring a granola bar most mornings for the homeless guy who lived on the corner near my house. I always had to wait at the light, anway, so I'd bring one for him and one for me.

  • I don't think they are saying food isn't good enough... just that they don't mind giving their own money.  IMO it's just easier to give cash.
  • I don't think anyone meant that giving food was a bad thing. I will give food and/or money depending on the situation. I think the feeling was more along the lines of you should do the right thing by helping someone, whether they do the right thing with the money or not. (Someone said that)

I think giving food/blankets/coat is just as good or better than giving money. I see no problem with it, and I didn't think the other posters did either.

  • I've only bought food once.  I was at a Chipotle downtown, and a woman asked me for cash.  I didn't have any, so she proceeded to grab my unfinished food that I had thrown my napkin in and eat it.  I stopped her and bought her her own burrito.  Solid proof that that woman genuinely was hungry and not jones-ing for a fix.
  • I've definitely given money before. But when I was in university there was this homeless guy by my school that had a little cat. Super cute little thing. So I bought him cat food. He was genuinely touched.

Who I rarely give money to is the squeegee kids. But the other day I had a toonie in hand and was hoping someone would clean my dirty windshield and they bypassed my car. :(
