WWYD (rolling over at night)

My LO has decided to start rolling over constantly, and now he does it in his sleep. When he's awake, he lifts his head & everything is fine. When he's sleeping, he basically buries his face in the mattress. I keep freaking out when I wake up & check on him. I flip him back on his back, but he just rolls over again.

I've never let him sleep on his tummy because of SIDS. I guess I wouldn't freak out so much if he turned his head to the side, but he doesn't. He does a face plant into the bed.

Does anyone else's LO do this? Do you leave him/her or keep flipping the baby back over?

  • Mine, too.  Scares the heck out of me!  It's been happening for a couple of weeks now and hasn't improved.  I try to roll her face to the side or I sleep with her on a futon on the nursery floor. For naps, I've been putting her in the bouncy seat.

  • My Pedi told me if he starts to roll on his tummy during the night to leave him....he does it because its comfortable....as long as he has the neck control to lift his head if need be.
  • My LO has been doing this for 2 weeks now too.  I asked the dr. and they said he should have the strength to move his head if he needs to.  I am very worried, but I cant sit and watch him every second.   I do sneak in his room and check on him from time to time, though.

  • once they roll, they should be ok. . . which is what my doctor had said.
  • My LO has started doing this too the last few nights. The first time I saw him like that I freaked out and flipped him over. I rolled him to his back about 3 times last night and he keeps ending up on his tummy. I guess it probably isn't that big of a deal since the SIDS rules change all the time and I think my mom almost always put me on my stomach to sleep...but it still makes me nervous.

For now I guess it's OK since he can roll to his back on his own if need be, but I plan to continue to check on him at night and turn him over if I think he needs it.

  • My LO is a side sleeper, and sometimes rolls to his tummy.  I know it's okay to leave him since he's rolling there himself, but it still scares me and sometimes I do roll (although what a bad idea it was 2 nights ago!).  He sometimes plants his face straight down in the mattress, which is what makes me most nervous.  If his face was to the side, I wouldn't worry as much.  I just keep telling myself that it's okay because he's rolling himself and I am taking all of the recommended safe sleep precautions (he sleeps in a Halo sleepsack, no bumper or pillows, fan, pacifier).

  • My DS rolls nightly but he turns his head to the side so I'm not worried, I just leave him like that. 9 times out of 10 he's on his belly when he wakes up now. I'd put him to sleep that way now if I could figure out how to transfer him like that without waking him b/c I think sometimes when he's flipping he wakes himself up!
