Babies: 3 - 6 Months

has anyone flown with LO?

I am deciding whether or not I should fly to my parents house with LO next month- for anyone that has- was it a big hassle? was it hard? Any tips? Is there enough room in airplane bathrooms to change LO?

Also, what did your LO sleep in when you got to your destination? a pack n play?

Re: has anyone flown with LO?

  • We flew this past weekend. It was a short flight so I didn't mess with changing her. I let her nurse and rest against my chest, and she slept the whole flight.

I bought a protective bag off of amazon for gate checking her carseat so that it didn't get dirty. It worked perfectly, and I found that people were willing to help me since I was traveling on my own.

Most airlines don't assign the bulkhead (row at the front of the cabin with no one in front of you) until the day of the flight, so you might ask at the counter if you could get one of those seats as it'd give you a little more room.

She sleeps in a rock and play at home, so I found one on Craigslist and she slept in that. I was visiting my mom and figure we'll visit at least one more time (probably) before she outgrows it, and it'll sell pretty easily.

  • Flying with my little guy has been a piece of cake!  He has been on 6 flights (4 of which were longer than 3 hours) in less than 6 months of life.  I EBF so I was sure to get a window seat for some added privacy.  During our last trip, at almost 5 months, he was definitely starting to test the length limits of the airplane changing station BUT at your LO's age, we had no problems, and he's in the 95th percentile for height.  Going through security can be kind of hectic - just remind yourself not to get stressed out about trying to rush through and not be a hassle to everyone else - if you try to rush chances are you'll be much more stressed.  At the time of our travels we were still bedsharing (DS has been in his crib for a couple weeks now, though) so we didn't have to worry too much about where he'd be sleeping.  This was one reason we chose to bedshare as long as we did.

  • I flew with DS a couple weeks ago. He is normally a fussy baby but he did great and slept most of the way. It was a short flight so I didntdidn't change him. Southwest provided a bag f or the carseat.

  • We flew with DD at 11 days old and again at 2 months, both to the East coast so 2 2 hours flighs with a layover each direction. It was very easy. Like PP said, just try to keep calm when going through security and you'll be fine. We gate checked stroller/car seat and you can get those big plastic bags for the car seatswhen you check in (our stroller has its own bag). She slept in the Eddie Bauer travel crib which fold up in a suitcase....now that she is 3 months she wouldn't fit in that so well anymore since it is small. We also have the Baby Bjorn travel crib which is pricey but we will travel a lot and should fit in it until at least 2. I also EBF which makes it even easier because I didn't have to worry about bottles. I sat in an aisle seat. I did travel with DH but on one flight we didn't get to sit next to each other and sat next to some guy. I really didn't care whether he minded me BF next to him. He didn't say anything anyway. I changed her diaper right before boarding and right after deplaning each time so I have not used the changing table on the plane. I will have to more than likely when we go to Europe next month but it will be on a 777 so it should be a bit roomier than the canada regional jets we usually fly on (at least I hope so!). Good luck, you will be fine!

  • We just flew to the UK with DS and it was much easier/less stressful than I had imagined. Just make sure you're prepared/organized. He slept in a pack n' play which DH's mom already had ready for us (so we didn't need to travel w/ that). Here are some things we did:

    - find out the bulkhead policy on your flight by calling the airline...we had to arrive super early because the bulkhead seats were first come, first served. We ended up getting them which was a huge help.

    - pack at least 2 extra outfits for LO in case of a blowout

    - have wipes and diapers handy for diaper changes on the plane...it was actually really easy to change DS's diaper on the flight...there was a huge changing table that folded down above the toilet. I just carried him in one arm, and the diaper/wipes in the other arm.

    - buy a pack of those disposable changing pads to put down on top of public restroom/airplane changing tables (just make sure you get the large sized ones...I had two different sizes and the larger ones were much better)...you can get them at BRU.

    -  have a bottle ready (or if you're BFing you're set) for during takeoff/landing just in case your LO's ears hurt. DS's ears didn't hurt at all (he slept through takeoff and landing) but I heard this helps. A paci is also good to have within arms reach.

    Good luck!
