Bakers-I need cookie help!

Baked cowboy cookies with ds#1 this morning, what a disaster!  Good thing he has no idea how they are supposed to turn out, lol.

Why did my cookies get really thin and stick to the pan?  The recipe said not to grease the sheet...followed the recipe for everything and they stuck bad.

Help! I have a big bowl of dough and don't want to screw it all up. TIA

  • Without seeing the recipe, it's hard to say why that may have happened.  I would just try one sheet with some non-stick spray and see what happens:)  However, if they are thinning out really bad, it's likely something else that needs fixing in the recipe.

This is the recipe, I never bake so I have no idea what I did wrong :(

  • Did you use baking soda as called for or baking powder? Also, it may have been the temp of the butter. Sometimes really thin cookies are from the butter.

After looking at the recipe, these would be my comments as well.

  • yep used baking soda but I may have melted the butter too much..hmmm.  That stinks, lol.
  • BTW, these sound yummy.  Too bad DH hates oats and coconut:oP  Maybe I'll make some and bring them to work or to the sitters just so I can have some, LOL.

  • They taste sooo yummy, just look like crap, lol.  Sad, ds wanted to take some to dh's office..how embarassing, the ladies would laugh at me for sure!  Do you think that batch of batter is garbage now?  No way to fix it I guess?

Try sticking the batter in the fridge/freezer for a bit to firm the batter back up a bit.

I'll give it a shot, thanks alot ladies! Wish me luck :)

  • Yeah, I'd do that and if they still turn out flat, but tasty, you can get or make some white or cream cheese icing and make them into sandwich cookies. That sounds amazing to me!

Yep, sounds like a butter problem to me as well.  You can try saving them as another PP said by refrigerating the dough for a while, then putting them on the cookie sheet.

This post makes me want cookies now!

  • Yep I melted the butter completely, rookie mistake Embarrassed

I'm going to try and chill the dough and bake a new batch during nap.  I am still eating the skinny ones, they are deeelish!

  • I have that problem too sometimes. From the process of elimination, I determined that when my cookies turned out flar it's because the butter got too soft. In addition, make sure to bake on the center rack. That way they are not too close to the top or the bottom. If they are too close to the bottom of the oven, it can burn the bottoms, making them darker on bottom and possibly making them stick a bit.

Cookies are hard to get just right! I bake a lot and am still trying to get the perfect cookie. It only happens for me every so often!

  • One more thing! Really watch them in the oven as well. I take them out just as the edges are becoming golden and it looks like they are setting up because they will continue to cook a bit after you take them out of the oven and they sit on the hot cookie sheet.
