STTN and Pumping Question

I am sure it varies by the person but I would love advice on if you needed to pump during the night to avoid engorgement once LO started STTN.  Will I need to pump a little at first for my body to adjust or will it be necessary every night? What have you found to be your experience?

Re: STTN and Pumping Question

  • My LO has been STTN for about 3 weeks and I do not get up to pump.  I have not felt engorged or had any problems with my supply.  GL!!

  • Most of the time I dont pump during the night. Sometimes I get so engorged I leak, thru my nursing pads, so we have a waterproof mattress pad. It has not affected my supply at all. If I feel super full before bed (already engorged) I'll pump, but if not I go to bed and hope I don't leak.

ETA: DD has been sleeping thru the night since week 2 :)

  • I usually pump at 9 before bed then end up waking up sometime between 3 and 4 to pump... I wish I could sleep through it.

  • I only got engorged once... then my milk started to regulate.  I still have a lot of milk in the morning, but I feed LO and then pump each morning.  I think it's best to not pump during the night because then it's signalling your body to continue making that milk.
