Was I fat before???

So I know this was supposed to be taken as a compliment, but I find it hard to think of it as one....

I went to the dentist today and warned the tech that I am 6 mos pregnant and sometimes gag.  She looks me over and says, "Wow, 6 mos!  You look great, I can't even tell your pregnant!"  Now like I said, I'm sure it was suposed to be a compliment, but I have definied bump going on here...there is no way you wouldn't notice I was bigger than I was before...unless was I this huge before and didn't realize it?!?!

(sorry just wanted to vent taht out there lol)

  • I hate that comment! Seriously don't think twice about it.. it's just one of those stupid phrases people say thinking they're being nice and not realizing that it also can be interpreted as an insult!

  • I had that comment a week or so ago. Pay no attention. It's the flip side of the rude comments we sometimes get. In this case they're either trying to be nice or are totally unobservant. Basically, it comes down to this: people are clueless; this is amplified 10-fold when talking to a pregnant women. My approach is to ignore anything anyone other than my husband or doctor says to me about my pregnancy. Pregnancy is an opportunity to improve my body image and accept my body as it is so I can teach my daughter to do the same.

This! I think this everyday! I feel like my beer belly has just grown bigger because the top half of my belly really isn't growing much. So it just looks like (to me) that my beer belly is much much bigger. I got this exact comment this past weekend. Don't let it bug ya! :)

  • It would be one thing if it was your best friend, but I think that because it's the dentist, what they mean is that if they didn't know you beforehand, you wouldn't look that pregnant because you must have started from being thin. If that makes sense. So I wouldn't worry about it. Also, even close friends have said things like, "*I* look more pregnant than you do!" to mean that they thought that when I was 4-5 months pregnant, I still just looked like a regular person, albeit fatter than how I started. You have to interpret it that way in order for it to be a compliment as opposed to an insult.

  • I've had this comment several times and I always think the same thing you do especially because I wasn't skinny to start out with (I wasn't huge either-just a little chunky).  Anyway, I'm trying not to let it get me down because I know that I look fine, I haven't gained a lot of weight, I'm continuing to exercise etc.  In other words, I'm doing the best I can and that's all I can do.

  • I got the same comment from my eye doctor yesterday! Except I think she caught on that it sounded a little insulting so she followed it with... "you look like your having a very healthly pregnancy, I hope I look as good as you when I'm pregnant." and all I could think was NICE SAVE!!! Wink
