NPR - wwyd re: cleaning lady

so two times in a row, after my cleaning people have come, something strange broke in the house.  1 was our shower door -- which granted, is probably 10 years old and maybe just broke on it's own, but seems odd.  I went to open the door, felt tension, then it came off the runner and a piece fell to the ground.  I thought maybe one of the cleaning people had done something (pulled too hard, jammed it too far to the side, something like that) but not sure.  Then today (next time they've come since the shower door broke), dh went to pull the curtains back and the holdback/hook that was holding them fell to the ground.  It's made of wood, and the wood is split in 2 places.  the curtains (and hardware) are brand new.  Now, I happen to have an extra holdback so I can put that on, no sweat off my back, but just seems weird.  dh said he didn't do anything...just as soon as he moved the curtains from the holdback, the thing fell to the ground.

I've never had a problem with these cleaning people.  they've been coming to my house for over 3 years now.  but it just seems odd that 2 times in a row I had things seem to just "fall apart" when we touched them.  I already have an extra curtain thing (so don't need to pay for a new one) and it's quite possible the old shower door just fell off through no one's fault.  so do I bother asking them about it?  I don't want to sound accusatory as we've been very happy.  not sure I would gain anything by asking them about it?  wwyd?

  • I have had similar experiences with my cleaning people.  I went through several others before finally finding my current ones a couple of years ago and they are amazing.  A couple of times, things have been broken after they have been here.  Once the coffee maker and last time the drain stopper.  I never mentioned the coffee maker since it was a cheap one and I assumed it was an accident.  However, the drain stopper was jammed into the drain and I would have had to call a plumber to fix it.  I'm sure it was an accident too, but I called the main lady to ask about it (new for me - I usually don't speak up :)).  She was wonderful.  She was not the one who cleaned the bathroom.  She came over that night to try to fix it and then when it didn't work she had her husband come on the weekend and he was able to fix it.  In any case, my point is that in your case I would probably let it go since it sounds like it is stuff you can fix on your own and the shower door had to be replaced anyway.

  • Is there a new person on the "crew"?  We had something similar happen and it turned out there was a new girl that needed to learn how to be a little more gentle.
I would ask/comment in a passive manner.  Just so they know you're noticing things.
    I wish I still had a cleaning lady *sob,sob,sob*

They've been coming to your house for three years now, and you haven't had a problem, right? These incidents just sound like coincidences. If you have been happy with them for this long, I would just let it go.
