My back is killing me

Does anyone have good tips for backache?  Man, mine is just killing me.  I'm trying to stay away from Tylenol as much as possible.  I've start doing yoga a few times a week but it hasn't helped yet (it's only been a week of yoga).  The only thing that helps sometimes is lying down, and that's not so easy to do in the middle of the work day.

Re: My back is killing me

  • I brought a small throw pillow from home to work for my desk chair which helps a lot! I also get up and stretch throughout the day. At night, when my back has been hurting during the day, I sleep on my side with a body pillow between my legs and it really, really helps. Sometimes, I do break down and take some acetomenphin (sp??), I just avoid the actual brand Tylenol because of all the recalls, and get the generic store brand. And of course, a bedtime back massage from DH always helps!

  • Oh goodness, I'm with you! In fact, I think we all are!

I was blessed with a wonderful pre-natal massage over the weekend that blew my mind...and relieved A LOT of back pain and tenseness! The massage therapist used hot stones to work out the kinks and soreness in my back and other spots and let me tell yah - it was worth every penny! Sure, three days later, I'm feeling some pain again but I've decided that a massage once a month until EDD is not unreasonable at this point. Give it a try - you'll melt!

  • OP - I could have written that word for word myself! I think a lot of us are in the same boat. My doctor suggested calling your insurance company to see what's covered (either chiropractor, physical therapy or massage therapy) and to start seeing someone.

As for now, I'm trying not to take Tylenol, doing a bit of prenatal yoga, stretching and just trying to not do "too much" - which should be interesting next week when I go back to teaching Kindergarten!

  • I had some SEVERE back pain for weeks 21-22 this pregnancy.  At first it was my sciatica.  But then my massage therapist was able to fix that and as long as I do my stretches, that has stayed at bay.  But I think I had over done it and probably pulled a muscle or two in my lower back around that same time.  That took longer to heal.  I tried to get by with just using heat and elevating my feet at work, but it just wouldn't get better and I actually had to call in one day (which I never do unless I'm contagious).  Finally, DH made me take the weekend "off" and stay in bed.  That finally did the trick.  Now, as long as I make sure to take it easy and not lift DS or overdo it, I've been ok.  Oh, and my trick for applying heat is to get a tube sock and fill it with rice.  Put it in the microwave for about 1.5 minutes.  Aaaaaahhhhh.  Heat + counterpressure works wonders!  You can also stick it in the fridge/freezer for cold applications.

  • Somethings that worked for me: stretching, ice/heat, backrubs.  I also ended up going to a chiropractor- and he is amazing- my back pain started at like 11 weeks, and I have had rare back pain since then (when I started going to him).

I did this and my doc ok'd icy heat which I find really helps loosen up the back especially in the morning.

I went to a physical therapist who specializes in pg women.  She gave me some stretches and exercises to do--they really help a lot!
