Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Baby Poo Question...

DS has not poo'd since Friday morning. I'm getting worried. Should I be? What to Expect said they can go 2-3 days without the poo fairy, but DS has always been a 1-2x daily poo'er. He doesn't seem to be in distress or pain. I've been doing bicycle legs with him and rubbing his belly. I'll ask the RN who runs our mom's group tomorrow, but do you think I should call his pedi too? Is there a decrease in poo around this time?

  • I'd call Pedi also. Thats a while for no BM for a little baby. LO is a 1x a day pooper, and skipped Sunday and I was so worried, she finally let it out today.

  • He eats breast milk right? I wouldn't worry yet. Feels his tummy, if it's soft there is no blockage. You can try giving him a hot bath or taking his temp (up the bum) to stimulate something. He will go though. DS1 went 7 days once without going and ds2 has gone 3 days before. This is totally normal for breastfed babies.

  • my DD still poops 3-4x a day and is EBF.  I'd be concerned and call the pedi thats just me though.

I thought breastfed babies went more frequently?

Not necessarily. Sometimes the baby is taking all of the nutrients from the milk and therefore don't really have much to let go of. As long as there are wet diapers frequently then I would not be concerned.

  • I looked at Kellymom.com, but couldn't find anything concerning bowel movements. I then just googled and found this:

I'm sure by searching more, you would be able to find more information.

  • On Friday I was at a county fair and ate crap food all day. Could that affect his poo fairy? (I'm primarily thinking the corn dog or the deep fried milky way bar...)

LOL. Although, some foods can cause more gassiness and bother baby, I don't think what you ate would have. Although, I could be wrong. :-)

  • DS1 went 6 days once.  It is hard to not get concerned, but it is normal.  Just be prepared for an explosion.

I'm thinking just because I posted about it the poo fairy will come with a vengeance at 2:00 AM.

  • I had a similar thing with DD and called the pedi.  She told me breastfed babies start to absorb more, so they can go a few days without pooing.  I still took her in and found out she was fine.  When in doubt, always call the pedi!
  • Our LO poops less often and is breastfed.  No bowel movement today although usually it's once a day.

  • My pedi said that BF'd babies can go up to like seven days, and sometimes even longer, without pooping and not have any problems.

My DD2 has gone two days or so a few times, although she normally does 1-2 times a day.

I wouldn't worry yet.  Around that age, my LO started going less and less and was EBF at that time.  She now goes once every 2-3 days and has gone as long as 5 days before.  Now we just have to be ready for them because if we do not hear her go and don't clean her up right away we have a major blowout on our hands and end up in the bath.  Maybe TMI  :)
