Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Still spitting up?!

DD is almost 5 months old and still spitting up! She had AR, but I'm pretty sure she's grown out of it because she doesn't get upset anymore when she spits up...as a matter of fact she usually smiles or giggles. It doesn't matter if we sit her up after feedings or not she will still spit up and it's quite a bit. She's gaining weight and the pedi seems to think everything is fine, but it's crazy to think that it's normal for her to be spitting up 2-3 times (sometimes more) after pretty much every feeding. Most of the time it's 2-3 hours after she ate, but sometimes it's right after she eats. I'm so confused and worried that it might be something else. Not to mention I am sick and tired of doing so much laundry! Anyone else experience something similar? Does this sound normal?

Re: Still spitting up?!

  • Is she upset when she does it, or does she act like it didn't even happen?

DS1 was a happy spitter until he was at least 7 months old (sitting unassisted and eating a full menu).

DS2 is a happy spitter as well. He spits up if he has eaten too much and will spit up even an hour or so later (usually this is more of a thicker spit up). It doesn't really bother him though. It bothers me, more than it bother him.

  • LO is on zantac and Prosobee formula and STILL spits up also, but like you said, it doesn't upset her anymore.
  • Yeah it doesn't seem to phase her anymore. We were using Zantac, but she seemed to have been getting better so we took her off. Still using thickened formula though.
  • Spit up, in varying degrees, is par for the course for a lot of babies until they get past 6 months or on more solid foods.  Liam still spits up like crazy (he has AR but the pain is controlled with meds).  So much so that daycare has to have 4 outfits on hand every day to change him into.  He even spits up his cereal feedings and I make them pretty darn thick now.  I really don't expect him to grow out of it until he is closer to a year.  As long as she's gaining weight and not acting like she is uncomfortable then it's mostly just a laundry problem.

I'm really not looking forward to having to wash veggie and fruit spit up out of his clothes, but I know I'm going to have to get really good at stain removal!

  • DS1 spit up till he was 14 months.  He had AR, but on meds till about 10 months.

DS2 doesn't have AR, but spits up all the time. I am expecting him to continue just as long.  Some kids are spitters.

  • Dylan has AR, too, and is on Zantac.  He's a happy spitter now, but he still spits up A LOT.  3-5 times between bottles, somtimes more.  I have no idea how he's still gaining weight, but he is, so the dr isn't concerned.  It's a laundry issue more then anything else.

  • DD spits up a ton.  Sometimes it's right after a feeding, sometimes it a few hours later.  She likes to keep us on our toes.  The laundry sucks, but we just have a huge stack of burp cloths and keep a bib on her all the time to salvage her outfits as much as possible.

As long as she's gaining and doesn't seem to be in pain, it's not a problem and there's nothing to do about it.

  • She sounds like my DD. Almost 5 months and still spits up all the time. It doesn't correlate to any specific times either. It can be right after or hours later. She often has projectile spit up...today her pacifier blew out of her mouth and the spit up hit the wall. That's some force!!

Yup, this. I try to warn people, but they never believe me until *oops* too late!

  • DD doesn't have AR and she still does that. It has caused zero problems for her so we aren't worried. Some babies simply spit up.
