How do you bathe LO?

We have an infant tub that used to go on the kitchen counter. LO began splashing too much and getting water everywhere so we moved her tub into the bathroom (infant tub inside the tub).

Tonight, DH had to take a shower so we considered running the shower, having DH hold her while I washed her hair, handing DH the washcloth and than I would have taken her downstairs to finish getting her ready for bed while he finished his shower.

We ended up using the her tub, but it's a rather tempting idea - to have DH hold DD in the shower. It would provide a bit extra bonding for DH and DD, save us the pain of having to sit on the floor and lean over to give her her bath, and she always loves it when we've dripped water on her.

Would you do this? Or do you view it as too risky (in case LO slipped, which is why I'd stay in the room)?

Re: How do you bathe LO?

  • DD is always moving around, so I would be really worried about handling her while she's wet and I'm wet.  She would definitely slip through my arms.  I might try sitting in the tub with her and then wash her that way.    But if your baby is really calm, maybe I would try it.

  • I cobathe with him. I set his bouncy seat by the tub for when I get in and out or I have DH hand him to me or take him. He loves to splash and float. I think it really helps him decompress at the end of the day and it's good bonding for us. He loves baths. He doesn't like his little tub. I've realized the baby tub is a waste of money and hard on my back.

  • That's how we usually bathe Lucy (DH or I shower with her). It's too much of a hassle to handle two kids being bathed every night (or every other night). I usually shower at night anyway, so I'll just bring her in with me. I set her in the bouncer in a towel after she's done so I can finish. I've also set her in the bumbo until I was done.
  • This has nothing to do with bathing.

Did you and DH talk today?

  • Sometimes I will sit in the tub with LO in her tub...just be really careful when holding a wet baby in your own wet arms. SIL mentioned to me that she did that with her daughters, and I tried it one time but it made me too nervous.
  • In the kitchen sink. Anything bigger and he freaks out. I can't wait until he is sitting on his own and I can bathe ds1 and ds2 together.

  • I shower with DD 90% of the time it is just easier.  I also will plug the kitchen sink sometimes and set her in it for a quick bath.  Her infant bath was a waste of money and she has fallen in it 3x.  Luckily I caught her every time.

Yeah, we did. We realized that we've forgotten about "us" since LO was born and instead of talking like we usually do, I just let a bunch of stuff build up til I exploded. And the reason he never texted me today was because he left his phone in his car.

We had MIL watch LO for a bit and went for a walk and talked (bad bad idea considering it was 90+ here)
  • We did it from time to time with DD and it was just fine, go for it! It's perfect for when you travel and don't want to bring a baby tub. Wrap her in a towel (we had thin Target ones for this use) for 'grip".You'll likely still need 2 pairs of hands though.

One time I did it alone......put DD in her bouncey right next to the tub, naked and wrapped in her towel and also laying on another towel......I did my shower super fast then leaned over to pick her up in her wrapped towel (leaving the second one still on the bouncey). When she was clean, I left her wet towel in the tub until later and leaned over to put her in her bouncey on the dry towel so I could step out w/o her in my arms.

I much prefer giving an actual bath though. Seems more fun for them to splash and relax and kick about. And there is an added element of safety I guess. I have sliding doors, too, so I also have to deal with those nasty pokey tracks :(

  • We either have her bathe in her tub on top of the kitchen sink-we don't have the splashing problem. Or she bathes with her big sister. DD1 holds her somewhat while I quickly scrub her down or I take a bath with her and usually DD1 hops in too.

  • DD often showers with DH. When we are both home, I let him get in the shower, and when he's ready, hand him DD. She likes to be under the water, and sits calmly in his arms. I scrub her with soap so DH can have a good hold on her. It's a huge time saver, and is so much easier. I was nervous to try it at first, but now it's our favorite way to bath her.

  • Usually its in an infant tub in the bath tub. But when on vacation, I shower with her. I just lay her by the shower in her diaper while I wash my hair and such. Then I take her diaper off and bring her in the shower with me. I have a towel on the ground waiting for her when we are finished. Its not hard to do by  yourself, even.
  • $6 frog shaped bath sponge from BRU. She loves to lay in the tub and splash.  The other night propped her up on her tummy on top of the sponge, keeping my hand on her chest the whole time.  She would swat at her rubber duck and grin when it would 'swim' away from her.
