Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Bruising from being born?

DH's cousin had a baby yesterday (yay!  a boy named Jack) and pics of him were posted on fb today.  We both noticed that he seemed really purple... well, his face did, the rest of his body was swaddled so we couldn't see.  We scrolled through the pics and below one was the caption "A little bruised from being born."  I didn't know that could happen I guess.  I mean, with my LO, I pushed for an hour and a half, and she had no brusing.  However, at birth she was smaller than this baby by 3lbs 4.5oz and 1 1/2 inches.  After realizing that the purple we were seeing was in fact bruising, sure enough, we could make it out.  His little face was pretty well bruised.  Has anyone else seen this?  Just curious as to how frequently this happens, because I'd never heard of this before.

  • It can happen.  Sometimes it happens when they come really fast.  It happened to a friend of mine.

  • Baby A had a horrific black eye from being squished into my birth canal for who knows how many hours.  He still has a birth mark on his eye lid.

  • I pushed for 10 minutes and Dylans head was all bruised up.  He actually had "bruises" (blown blood vessels) in the whites of his eyes from the quickness of the whole business of being born.

  • Oh yeah.  Mine got stuck after her head came out (shoulders were squared off) and the cord was around her neck, so there was a lot of pushing and pulling going on.  Her face was very bruised as well as one of her arms.
  • A coworker's granddaughter was PURPLE.  I'm not talking a little bruised. Poor think was grape colored, head to toe :(

  • DD2's arms and legs were really purple when she was born.  She had to get oxygen right away because they thought that was the problem.  The first night she slept in the isollette (sp?)  It eventually went away.  I had a c-section and my dr. was kind of confused.  Where she was bruised was not where they had pulled her out.  He thought she could've been pressed against my bones also.  I went into labor on my own so she had dropped lower.  FWIW, it went away in a couple of days and she is perfect now! :)
  • Here is DS1 when he was born. He looks a little like he was put through the ringer...lol.

  • If the baby comes out really fast they can get really bruised.

My ex-boyfriend from high school was born at home on the toilet, haha.  His mom went into labor at home and, an hour after her first contraction, she was sitting on the toilet ready to deliver.  He shot out so fast there was nothing anyone could do to help and he was black and blue all over.

  • i'm purple in all my newborn pictures. my face was bruised because i was born "sunny side up" (face first instead of top of the head first).
  • Both of mine had bruising on their head... they also both came really fast. DS also had some bruising on his shoulders, arms, and feet.

  • DS was the same. Extreme facial bruising and hemorrages in both eyes. They actually put a note on my door for all the incoming docs/nurses so they wouldn't immediately think lack of oxygen.

I did one "practice" push and two real pushes when the doctor came and he was here! They said it is more common when they decend very quickly.

As a side note, all of the bruising and a being a 36 weeker contributed to very high jaundice levels...

My daughter was one big bruise.  And she was even born via scheduled c/s.  She was a big baby though and she had bruises on her back, her forehead, and even on her girly parts!  Her forehead was one big bruise where she was pushing to drop, but obviously there was no room for her.  She was 8lb6oz at birth and was born at 37 weeks!  And I am a small person, so there was no way I would have been able to deliver her naturally.
