Babies: 3 - 6 Months

tummy sleeping concerns

DD is in her crib now but it seems like whenever I check on her, she has rolled onto her tummy... it worries me with the risk of SIDS and all.  How worried should I be?  I keep rolloing her back to her back, but it sometimes wakes her up and then it is heck in a handbasket trying to get her back down again, and is of course disruptive to the whole STTN thing.  Should I let sleeping babies lie?

Re: tummy sleeping concerns

  • In my opinion it's fine. I wouldn't wake her. If she can roll to her tummy, she's strong enough to turn her head. But, I've been wrong before.

  • Unless you are planning on pulling up a chair next to the crib and rolling her back over all night long, then I would let it go. At this point, there isn't much you can do but let them sleep how they feel most comfortable. Would you like to be moved everytime you fell asleep? :-)

This is coming from a mom who's both ds's slept on there tummy's from 1 week old though, so take it with a grain of salt.

  • I've always heard that, once they are proficient at rolling either way, you can stop worrying about whether they are sleeping on their back or tummy.  You should probably always start her out on her back but, after that, I wouldn't worry about it.  Just check on her for a while until you are sure that everything is okay but don't move her.

  • "Should I let sleeping babies lie" Yes! Once they can roll the the risk of SIDS is reduced.  I was concerned at first, too and kept rolling him back over but my attempts were futile. He sleeps better on his tummy anyhow :)

  • SHe is easilty rolling back forth both ways and has excellent head control and all... I think I have a bad case of first-time-mama-paranoia.  Thanks ladies, I'll let the poor child sleep.
  • I am SO glad you asked this as I was getting ready to post this same thing!  Our DD is typically a back sleeper.  Well, tonight I got her down to sleep and went in the kitchen to make bottles for tomorrow.  I heard her on the monitor make a little noise but did not realize she had rolled from her back to her tummy.  I came to check on her a few minutes later and there she was asleep on her tummy.  I was totally freaked out!!!  Her head was turned to the side and she was sleeping peacefully but Mommy was sure shocked!  I know it is normal and I should not worry, but like you, I have first time Mommy worries.  Indifferent

  • What I've read and heard is that as long as baby is strong enough to turn their head to breathe, and can turn over by themselves, the chances of SIDS is drastically reduced.

My DS has hated sleeping on his back since day one. So we had him on his side for the first month. He would always turn to his back, and wake up screaming. We tried him on his tummy at 1 month, and sleeps soundly through the night. I watched him like a hawk the first week or so. He's been able to turn his head and recently started scooting in his sleep.

    Good luck!

I agree with this.  If your LO is strong enough to roll over on her own, then she's strong enough to move her head around as well.

My DD has been sleeping on her tummy since she was 2 weeks old, it's just how she was most comfortable...

  • It is okay to let her sleep on her tummy, if and only if she rolls there herself, which she is doing.  I can totally relate to the fear though, and the temptation to roll her back.  I found my DS tummy sleeping last night and rolled him to his back, even though I knew it was okay, and what a mistake that was!  It took forever to get him back down, but it made me nervous seeing him like that in spite of knowing it's okay.  But I learned my lesson.  And I have taken all precautions to reduce the risk of SIDS: he sleeps in Halo sleepsacks rather then loose blankets, no bumper or pillow or toys, he uses a pacifier, and the fan is always on when he's sleeping.
