Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone have a Mirena? tell me about it!

I do horrible taking pills, and the hormones make me feel out of control..

tried the depo shot.. same out of control feeling.

thinking about mirena but wanted to see if anyone else had good or bad things to say about it, so if you use it fire away!

Re: Anyone have a Mirena? tell me about it!

  • I had a bad experience with getting it inserted and had to have it removed the following day (total fluke so I wouldn't worry about that)- that being said, the receptionist at my office told me that all the girls in the office have them (kinda weird that I now know that ;-)  and love them.  She said to give it a while to get totally used to it and that generally you'll spot for a little while each month and after a few months probably won't even get your period.  I didn't get that far, but it sounded promising!

  • I like mine its worry free!  It was a little painful the first week or two.  Since then no symptoms!

  • I have had it since my 6week appointment, I have no complaints! And on the plus side my periods are alot lighter and shorter :)
  • Well if you don't do well on the hormones of the pill and shot I would go with an IUD like the Paragard(no hormones). I had the Mirena and i had to take it out because it made me on edge ALL. THE. TIME. About a week after i gotit out i was soooo much better.
  • I like it...now.

All I can say is that getting it put in was horrible.  If mine ever comes out, I won't go through it again.  Now I know not everyone has a painful insertion but if you decide to go for it I would suggest not taking LO and having a friend with you.  I was at the office literally for hours, cramping to the point of retching, while the office ladies watched Aiden.  I had to stay until I felt I could drive.

  • Mine wasn't really painful at all.  I cramped a little bit after it was inserted.  BUT - I have been spotting ever since.  Seriously.  Going on 4 months of bleeding here.  Super Angry

this is what I am afraid of.. ugh. I didn't want Paragard because I already have heavy periods and heard this can make them worse..

what to do... what to do..

Just curious- did they ever do an ultrasound to see if it was placed correctly?  This sounds like my experience and it turned out that it stuck into the wall of my uterus (not to scare you!).  It was no big deal, just had to have it taken out.  They wanted to put another one it but I decided to just go with the pill because I dreaded another insertion (though many girls on here say it was no big deal)

They did, thanks for checking! :)  The doctor was thinking that at first too but the u/s showed it was fine.  They aren't sure why I reacted the way I did but I can tell you this - I never would have survived labor.  My c section was a blessing in disguise :-p

  • I absolutely HATED it. I know some women have great experiences with the Mirena, but for me it was pure torture. It hurt (and was placed correctly) the whole time it was in, made sex terrible because of the pain I was in, I had migraines, I turned into this crazy, mean (and I'm serious I was MEAN) person that my husband did not recognize.

Add all that in with the fact that for the first 14 weeks of LO's life I bled 13 of them. And I was done with PP bleeding at 6 weeks, the rest was the Mirena.

But, remember it has different effects on everyone. I've never done well on any type of hormonal birth control, so maybe my experience is *special*.

  • I had DD by c-section which was scheduled, so I never dialated. When I had the Mirena put in it was very painful. Then I fainted in the waiting room. Other than that I like it (it's been about 7 weeks)

Granted I had an epi and I'm sure I had all the adrenaline going, but I remember saying that the IUD insertion was worse than labor! hahahhaha...how quickly we forget how bad labor sucks!

  • I have it & it's okay. At first, the strings (feels like fishing line) were too long & that was SO painful every time I'd move. I got them trimmed but they're still long enough that DH can feel them when we have sex. I spotted for about 3 wks

  • I really like it. I hate that I spotted for about 6 weeks with it but other than that I've had no problems. Insertion didn't hurt at all-- I just had some cramping later that evening.

I was thinking about the paragaurd, but my MW recommended the Mirena and said she wouldn't even put in a Paraguard because so many women hated them and came back to have it taken out.

  • I've had Mirena in since late July, I've had 1 period and it was very short and pretty light...I do have a couple complaints--I've been spotting pretty much every day since I got it inserted :( I spot so much that I was getting worried that I was pregnant again because I hadn't had a "period"-my spotting was so often that it was hard to tell the difference between that and my actual period. Plus, I feel so emotional, I was never like this pre preg or even during preg. At first I thought I was just emotional from being a new mom but it hasn't gone away and after reading other ladie's posts i'm afraid the hormones have left me unballanced :( I'm 50/50 about whether i'd recommend it or not...not sure if the pros outweigh the cons in this one...
