NBR: In Shock need to vent

I just saw (an hour ago) a man shot and killed by a policeman in downtown Seattle as I was waiting in traffic to go home.  I'm totally freaked out.

  • Oh wow.  I can't imagine witnessing such a thing.

Maybe watch a Disney movie?  I know it sounds cheesy, but once I couldn't sleep b/c something scary happened and it was the only thing that calmed me

  • Holy moly!  Yeah, that would probably freak me out for a good long time :(  My vote is a glass of wine before bed!

  • I am so, so sorry you saw that.  I saw a girl get hit ad killed by a car on my way home last year.  I had to allow myself to cry, talked w/ DH, let people know it was bothering me so they could support me.  Good luck and be sure to get lots of hugs tonight!!

This is a good idea..or maybe a really good comedy. Have Dh hold you tonight while you go to bed.

Sorry you had to witness that.

  • the man had a knife and the policeman felt threatened and shot him.  I heard the 5 shots, saw the man rocking on the ground with blood pouring everywhere and a lady video taping it outside her car as she yelled at the cop, "he's bleeding".  Uh, yeah, duh!  I came home to see on the news the man died so...that's disturbing.  DH was home when I got home and wasn't very supportive of my shock.  He's from a country where people often get shot and killed and was like...and??  I can't explain it to him...
  • thank god I was alone coming from work, don't know where all the bullets went!  Ugh.  I feel sick :(

Am I supposed to tell the police what I saw or no?  I don't know.

5 shots and the man had a knife...excessive maybe? I'm sorry you can't lean on your DH. I'm from the country people being killed in public is not all that common. Is there someone else you can lean on...your mama or dad?

I wouldn't think you needed to notify the police. You're just an unfortunate bystander that witness such an event.

My sister, but she has 2 little kids so it's hard to take up her time unless they're sleeping.  Yeah, I dunno what the deal was with the 5 shots at all.  It was surreal.  Maybe that lady will put her phone video on utube or something.

I wouldn't think so. Usually when it's on the news they say "Anyone with info/witnessed the event call...etc etc." I'm sorry you had to see that, it's stressful and shocking! Even seeing a car accident on the side of the road sometimes brings tears to my eyes for the people involved. Hope you feel better soon! (You will!)

  • If you have a crime victims service in your area, you can see a therapist free of charge, they usually also have 24 crisis counseling if needed.  I am so sorry you husband doesn't understand.

That's a plus.  Sounded like on the news there was some "discussion" between the police and "witnesses" over the number of shots.  That's all I'd need.

  • That's one thing that makes being married to a non-born American challenging at times!  Especially since he comes from such a violent country (Honduras), I know he cares about me, but he just doesn't see the big deal.  that's why he's out playing soccer now, because soccer IS important!  I joke, but ... I guess it's disappointing when we can't relate.
  • Dude that is so scary!  I know its not nearly the same, but I saw a man get hit by a bus when I was in grad school.  I felt awful for a long time afterwards.

  • You should contact the police department and let them know that you were a witness. Everyone has a different perspective of what happened and the police need all the witness statements to put together to get as close to what happened as possible. Police will legitemately investigate of the shooting was justified or not.

This! And I am so sorry you had to see that. I can't imagine what you are feeling right now. I would definitely consider talking about it to someone that will actually listen, even if it's just a co-worker or friend. You need to get it off your chest. Get lots of hugs tonight.
