Swing addiction-- what should I do?

DS will not nap in anything but his swing.  At bedtime he sleeps in his pack n play in our room for a good 12 hours straight, but during the day he will only nap in his swing.  The weight limit is 25 pounds.  Should I just not worry about it and let him nap there until he is too big and hope he gets over it, or should I be trying to transition him into his PNP or crib now?  I seriously stress about this every single day.

  • If you're stressing about it so much then change it up and say bye bye to the swing, but the transition might be very stressful as well. Maybe start putting DS in his crib for quiet play time so he gets adjusted to it? And then whatever you do for a wind down routine before naps, start doing them in his room instead of with the swing. Up the ante on all sleep associations that you are okay with in order to compensate for the lack of the swing. Not sure how useful it would be, but maybe even try copying some bedtime routine features for naptimes to mimic bedtime which occurs in the PnP?

Some great tips-- thank you so much :)

  • DD had somewhat of one too. I started out by letting her nap in the swing for the morning nap but making her nap in the crib in the afternoon. Then both naps. Now sometimes swing, sometimes not. But she will nap in her crib whenever I put her in! GL!
  • I am going through the same thing.  Almost all of DD's naps were in the swing, since she sleeps so well in it.  The other day though she gave me a scare in the swing, so we had to go cold turkey with it. Today is day 2 without it.  I end up having to rock her for a few minutes to get her drowsy, then put her in the crib.  I have her white noise on that she normally has at night and put her in her sleep sack.  She sometimes cries and I have to go in to replace the paci, but she was out after about 15 minutes.  She had 2 naps in the crib today, unfortunately only half an hour each.  The last nap today I had to rock her, hoping she would last more than 30 minutes, which she didn't.  Needless to say, she wasn't the happiest camper today. Yesterday I did the same thing in the morning and she slept for an hour and a half.

The suggestions that the pp gave are good.  You could try that.  For me, it was "never a good day" to start transitioning.  There was always a reason for me putting it off.  But eventually she has to be out of it, so I figured now was a good a time as any.  I am hoping her napping improves over the next while as she gets used to the crib.  And like your little guy, mine sleeps great in the crib.  (PNP for you!) Good luck, I feel your stress!

  • DS#1 did that too.  I started moving him to his crib after he fell asleep in his swing.  He eventually gave up the swing, it did take awhile though.
