Becoming a SAHM

So I have been back to work for a little over 2 months now and its terrible. I hate everyday I am here. I dont like my job, the people I work with or my boss... and I make crap for money... so im spending my days away from my son to be miserable.

We are throwing around the idea of me becoming a SAHM.... my questions to you who have went from working full time to being a SAHM (I know your out there)... how is it???? Do you regret your decision... if you had a buy what ever you want lifestyle and now have to budget, is that hard?

 Any advise is appreciated!

  • Yes, I think it's difficult to live on a tighter budget. Would I change anything? No.

If I were you, I would work for another month or 2 and bank your entire paycheck, especially if you don't have a large emergency fund. That way you'll have some extra money in savings and you will know if it will actually work for you or not.

  • It's a major adjustment. I went from being active duty military (I would go to work on monday get off on wednesday and then go back to work friday and not get off until monday morning. then reversed the next week) So, it was a huge adjustment just being home so much. Budgeting is harder now because we were used to being able to buy what we wanted (DH is active duty). I couldn't stand the idea of not doing a job so I actually joined the reserves which had helped me adjust alot. My best advice is think about how much a job matters to you and look at your finances. How much do you rely on your income?

Wow...it sounds like I could have written that. I feel the same way about my stupid job! I've tried MULTIPLE times to talk my husband into letting me stay at home but to no avail. We are all on my insurance plan and, to be honest, it's the only reason I've kept my job. I hope whatever you decide to do works out for the best!

A hundred hearts would be too few To carry all my love for you.

  • It is hard and definitely an adjustment to staying at home. Some months are easier to stay on budget and some are not. But I LOVE staying home with my daughter. I was here for the first time she smiled, the first time she laughed, the first time she rolled over etc.

Make sure you can live off one income. Do you have the option of working from home or working part time? Those might also be options you could check into it. I hope whatever you decide it works out for you!

  • I have loved being at home with DS but its def a huge adjustment!!  I would not change a thing though!!!  We are on a very very tight budget which can be hard at times but I just think 20 years from now I will look back and be soooo glad I got to spend every day with my kids!

Actually asking to go PT is what made my decision to just  quit a lot easier. I asked and was shot down very quickly because im too valuable to not be there all the time, so I asked about more money because I am extremely underpaid and was told there was nothing they could do about that. Its just not worth it... with what we pay in day care and travel cost because day care is 15 min in the opposite direction of work, im basically making minimum wage and I have been with the company 12 years.

We will be fine on one income just have to readjust out spending.. we currently do what we want, eat out multiple times a week and shop alot ... so as long as we cut back and think more reasonable we should be fine. we have a nice savings to help until we get adjusted.

I just hope I can adjust being home all the time. I have worked since I was 15! The good thing is, I have recently opened an in home bakery so I will be able to devote more time to that and not feel like I am loosing the minimal time I have with my son.
