Babies: 3 - 6 Months

how was it when you stopped swaddling lo?

my lo is almost 4 months and she's rolling from her back to stomach like crazy now, so last night we decided to stop swaddling her. well, she slept horribly but if i swaddle her she still rolls over, which of course isnt safe.

did any of you have probs when you stopped swaddling lo? and if so, you have any tips??

Re: how was it when you stopped swaddling lo?

  • We swaddled DS for a couple of days after we got home from the hospital. (He was in the NICU for a week.) Honestly I think it p!ssed him off more than comforted him. Since then, he's always slept with his arms over his head and legs sprawled out. I just put him in long sleeve footie pjs so he stays warm.

I would probably quit cold turkey and see how she does with it. There's not really any point to doing it one limb at a time if you don't have to is there?

  • We stopped cold turkey because LO started rolling over.  The first night she woke up a lot, the second night she woke up less, and by the third night she STTN.  Good luck!

  • DD was 4 weeks when we stopped swaddling her. She got to the point where she would scream every time we swaddled her so we stopped and she slept fine.

    DD#1 is 3! And LO#2 is on his/her way! Due Feb 26th, 2014.

BFP#1: EDD 5/7/2010 born on 5/20/2010. A little girl named Emily.

  • We started the 'one arm out' method this weekend- night #1 great, day 2 naps- great, night 2 and night 3...horrible- I had to put his arm back in just to allow me to get some sleep...not sure where to go from here- sorry no help!

I would do it the way you think your LO will best handle. Generally the recommended way is to do it one arm at a time for a few days. Ease them into it.

For us, though, that caused our DD to knock her paci out and get more pissed. So we had to cold turkey get rid of the swaddle and paci. It was rough, but at least the entire process wasn't dragged out.

But if your LO doesn't fight it horribly, dragging it out (easing into it) may be less traumatic.

    Use your judgment.

And give it time. It IS tough and scary to get rid of the swaddle, but since you don't really have a choice, accept the fact that your LO may have some bad nights in the beginning, but it will get better quickly.

All of this, exactly. We had to do the same thing.

  • We quit swaddling cold turkey for naps at 4 months and then weaned him gradually 2 weeks later for night time.  We also moved him to his crib at the same time, and that was a harder adjustment for him.  We did one arm out for 1 night, then both for 5 nights, then removed the swaddle part leaving just the sleepsack.  Now he sleeps in Halo sleepsacks as well as he did when swaddled.  Other then using a sleepsack as part of the transition, my only other tip is to be patient when she adjusts.
