Weight Loss??

I'm almost 18 weeks pregnant, at my 14 week appointment I weighed 171lb (I've always been heavy... I'm honestly not very big, mostly muscle and hips), anyway, I weighed myself this morning and I weighed 170lb. I know as a general rule you're suppose to gain a pound a week in your 2nd trimester, so I just wanted to know if this has happened to anyone else? This is my first pregnancy, and I read up on everything pretty thoroughly... but I also get nervous about silly things... anyways, is this concerning? Thanks!

Re: Weight Loss??

  • I lost about 5 pounds in the first trimester and it hasn't come back yet. OB told me to add a protein bar or shake to my day, but he doesn't seem concerned. This happened last time too and I ended up 22 pounds up and delivering a 9.5 pound baby girl!

  • I'm a few weeks behind you, but I lost another lb at my appointment this morning. I started at 171, was 169 at 10 weeks and was 168 this morning. Not sure why, I've been eating plenty. The way I look at it is that I have plenty of extra fluff so I'm not too worried.

  • Yeah, I have a check up in 2 weeks, I figure if I don't put on any more weight by then, or lose more, I'll definitely talk to my doctor. It's just weird because I didn't lose any weight in my first trimester, I gained 6 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight, but now I'm down to 5lbs. total gain... it's only a pound... but I'm just nervous. Thank you
  • I'm really stressed about this too.  Im 14 weeks and I lost about 5 pounds first trimester and I havent gained yet.  Im trying really hard but I dont know if I can eat enough to keep up my wait gain (im 6' and need a lot of calories and Im still not quite of being nauseus)

im trying to add high calorie food that isnt crap like full fat dairy and im having shakes every day.  my doctor isnt worried at all but im trying to do this all "by the book" and it kills me to not be able to gain my 1 pound a week.

  • I'm still down 15 lbs at 17 weeks.  My ob mentioned that she really wants me to start gaining.  I explained to her that although I'm not throwing up I have no appetite and get queasy all the time.  She told me to just snack when possible and to not worry about big "meals".  She said everything looks good and the baby is doing great so to not worry too much

  • I'm down 15 pounds since my BFP but i stayed steady at the last two appointments... so i'm thinking/hoping that ill start gaining now.  my doc doesn't seem concerned at all and said that either I'm eating better now than I was before PG or that pregnancy is correcting my lower metabolism.  All is progressing well, though.  So  woot!

There's your biggest problem- assuming you need to follow to the letter what some book tells you. Those numbers are also averages- which means some will be above and some will be below. You are the latter.

If your doctor is not concerned, you shouldn't be either. They know you far better than some book full of generalizations ever will.

I haven't gained a pound in the 3 appointments I have had. Everything is progressing well, so mine is not the least bit concerned. Many times women eat better while pregnant and will actually lose some of their weight that counteract what they are gaining in pregnancy weight.

That's great news. I figured it's probably something along those lines for me as well.. I never ate too much junk food, but now I'm very aware of what I eat. Not to say I don't have my fast food days, but they're less prevalent now that I'm pregnant.
