Cloth Diapering

what are diapers supposed to smell like after a wash?

Im having a hard time figuring out if my diapers are getting clean or not..I am using Indian unbleached prefolds and I have a LG front loader. I thought they weren't supposed to have any smell if clean but mine have some sort of smell, I dont know what. It's not an ammonia smell or anything..maybe its the prefold? I dont know. I am doing a cold short wash with no detergent and a hot wash on the stain cycle with an extra rinse with rockin green detergent. Any advice? Thanks!

  • They aren't supposed to smell like anything, from what I've heard. Mine don't anyways.
  • Mine do not smell like anything after washing.

  • I think mine get more of a smell when I use too much detergent. You might try stripping them, and instead but the soap on the first cycle (using only 1/4 of the recommended soap of a normal load of laundry)...and see if that helps any.

I tend to use only 1/4 of the amount on both the cold wash and the hot...and then the extra rinse with nothing added and they come out of the drier smelling clean. (don't sniff before they are fully dry)

  • It could just be your water. I know sometimes when I was prepping my CDs this past week some loads would give off a weird smell and some loads wouldn't. Maybe that's it?

  • I had that problem in the begining. I switched detergents and used more detergent (I was terrified of buildup so I wasn't using enough). Now they smell clean.
  • You might need to strip them.
