Problems STTN when traveling? (a little long)

Anyone have trouble getting their LO to STTN when traveling?

3 weeks ago, we traveled over the weekend and were gone for 2 nights. The first day was a really long day and while we tried to stay on schedule, we were off a little bit. The first night, DS was up every 30-45 minutes screaming like he was in agony. But, the minute I picked him up, I realized that he was actually asleep and crying at the same time. As soon as he was in my arms, he would stop crying and relax. We really like for him to be an independent sleeper, so I would calm him down and then lay him down again in the pack-n-play. Well, after 4 hours, I finally learned my lesson and slept in the chair holding him. I originally thought this was due to us being in a strange place and the second night would be better?boy was I wrong! The next night was worse!

So, while I was terrified to travel with him overnight again, I had to go to my parent?s house this past weekend. We were there for 2 nights and we experienced the same thing. At least this time, I had a comfortable recliner to hold him in! I tried to let him CIO, but when the entire house is sleeping it's really rude to let him cry for an extended amount of time.

It makes me terrified to travel with him in the future! Our next plan trip is for 5 nights in Sarasota when he will be 7 months old. I just don?t want the same thing to happen again and tarnish a nice vacation with family. Any idea what could be causing him to not STTN?

Information ? DS is 4.5 months old and has been sleeping from 8 PM to 8 AM for at least 6 weeks. He sleeps in a pack-n-play for his naps during the day, so it is not a totally new place for him. However, it was his first time at both places we visited.

  • I had a similar problem last night.  DD has been sleeping 8-10 hours straight since she was 6 weeks old.  Last night we stayed at my parents house and she woke up twice to eat and a few other times crying.  We have stayed the night there a couple times before and she is there often during the day.

He's 4 months old, so traveling could just be bringing out the 4 month wakeful in him. I bet you'll be fine by the time he's 7 months. I'm not saying he won't be thrown off, but if by then he's STTN consistently and has good sleep habits, I bet it won't be nearly that bad.
