Anyone used meetup.com to find a new group of friends?  I could use some new local friends.  My old ones here suck.  I love you ladies, but some IRL friends would be nice too.  There are no open groups in my area, actually there is only one group in my area and it's for mom's only, nice.

My sister moved from Detroit to Chicago, to Boston, to Georgia and now she's back in Chicago.... She LOVES meetup.com. She has met so many people through that site and she is still long distance friends with all of them. She's joined book clubs, wine tasting groups, boutique shop hops (that one sounds like fun) and several other things. She swears by it.

I know exactly how you feel and I'm actually thinking about using the site to meet more people too. I moved to St. Louis from Detroit and I want some of my "own" friends, not just the one's that I "have" to be friends with because they are married to DH's friends. Some of them really suck

My best friend IRL uses meetup.com.  She's had great experiences. She's used it to meet up with French speaking people in the area because she wants her daughter to be exposed to the French language because her in-laws speak French.  She also has a working moms group that she joined through meetup.com.

I haven't used it, but my mom has.  She said it is hit & miss - sometimes you find a great group of people, sometimes only one other person shows up.

I am thinking about a book club and see where it would evolve from there.
