Question about Constipation and opinion needed! (Sorry if TMI)

I know there have been a few posts about this, but I looked back a few pages and I can't seem to find the post I was looking for.

For about 5 days now I have been having really bad cramping pain, to the point it hurts to sit, or wear pants.  I can't seem to have a bowel movement or even pass gas.  I have tried everything after using google to find information and trying things my doctor recommended awhile ago but it seems to have gotten worse.

I increased my fibre intake, tried apples/apple juice (advise of a nurse), cut things from my diet that can constipate you, been taking milk of magnesia, activia yogurt, plenty of fluids, warm water, and it even came to the point last night that I had to go buy suppositories.

After the suppository last night, it helped a bit, but i'm the same again today.  I'm going to call my doctor as soon as they open in the morning but for now, is it safe to take another suppository?  and should I stop taking my Materna PNV?  I forgot it last night but should I stop taking it all together until I can get in to see my doctor?

Thank you for your help!

  • Have you tried coffee?  Or, I've even had some luck increasing my carb intake for a little bit.

  • I wouldn't stop your PNV, but you can ask your Dr about it.  Some brands have a stool softener included in the pnv, that might help you.

I'd take colace, as many as the label says you can take, to keep things soft so it won't hurt when you do finally go.  And I'd take metamucil.  That stuff acts like a plunger and will clear you out, it should work within 12 hours.  Personally, I think it's more effective then miralax and some of the other brands.  I'd mix up two heaping spoonfuls with a large glass of water and chug it so it doesn't thicken up on you.  I'd do that morning and night until things get more regular.  Then hopefully you can just do it once a day.

Keep up with the water, fiber, etc. that you're already doing.

    Good luck!

  • I really think that drinking A LOT of water is key.  I don't really eat a lot of fiber at all...I hate wheat/whole grain bread.  The only thing I do is drink tons of water and the longest I've gone without going is a day.  I have a 20 oz water bottle that I fill up 5+times a day.  It might not help you immediately, but couldn't hurt for the future.  Good luck!!!

  • I would switch PNVs to one with a stoll softener or a little less iron and see if that helps-  also coffee and dark chocolate always help!

I hate that part of pg-  I hope you get some relief!

  • I didn't have it that bad, but metamucil and hot water with lemon (lots of it) seemed to help me.  I wouldn't alter any approved medications until I talked to my doctor.  I probably wouldn't take another suppository yet either.  Hopefully they can help you out ASAP!  I know how painful it can be.

  • Sorry you're having a rough time with this, I struggled with it for the majority of my last pregnancy too.  For me what worked was eating a high fiber cereal every.single.morning.  I couldn't skip a day or things would get totally backed up.  Drink as much water as you can every.single.day.  Again, can't skip out one day or it will cause problems.  And the Colace is a good suggestion until you get things running smoothly.  You should try to find a diet where you can continue to take your PNV, they may contribute to constipation, but it's mostly your hormones to blame, they slow everything down in the digestive tract.  My Dr has me on an add'l 325mg of iron, and somehow I'm still managing to go most days.
