This is my first time posting, even though I would like to mention that I have been reading everyone else post and they are very helpful to me. Thank you.
I am 16 weeks along with my very first child and I am feeling extremly lost with all this new mommy to be stuff. I have not started buying anything for the baby yet. I am so over whelmed with everything, that I don't know where to actually start. I know that I will get a lot at the baby shower, but people are starting to ask if I am registered anywhere. I am not because there is too much stuff.
Like where the baby will sleep. I wanted to buy one of the 3 way cribs that change into a toddler bed and regular bed. I thought, well at least that item is taken care of but then I heard about co-sleepers and playards that could also work.
I asked my only friend I know that has a baby what she uses and she told me that the baby sleeps in her bed every night and never has been in the crib or bassinet a whole night yet. So it seems that I don't have much sleep. Any advise on what to get and what to not bother on.
Oh did I mention that I am in the middle of selling our house and that baby does not have a room of its own yet. I do have a big room and am planning on having baby in my room until the house sells.
Re: First time mom with a crib question
I'd start lurking on the nurseries and baby gear board.
Just make a list (or download one) and start doing some research. Consumer reports has good ratings. Then start seeing what you like the looks of. You've got plenty of time to figure it all out.

As for whether or not you are going to have the baby sleep in bed with you or not, it's a personal decision. My son has never slept the night in our bed. We didn't want him to get in the habit and I knew I wouldn't feel comfortable with how hard DH sleeps and how much I move around. We did have the pack n play in our room when he first came home and slept in that at night for the first two weeks. Once I got use to his sounds he made while he was sleeping, I felt comfortable moving him to his crib upstairs early on. With doing this, we haven't had any trouble with him sleeping in his crib (I've heard stories about babies who won't sleep in their cribs). Monitors have come a long way and if you want to you can turn the recievers up enough to hear them breathing on the other end. Everyone is different though.
As for kind of crib, we got him one of those 3 in 1 ones (crib, toddler and full). Which he will have in his room probably till he moves out. We didn't use the pack n play too much for sleeping (other then the first 2 weeks), we did use it for a changing table for a long time though. It also comes in handy when we travel so for us, it was not a waste of money. We ended up getting our crib online and had it shipped. I just found one I liked and then searched for the best price. We got the PnP from Amazon.
If I were you, I would use the pack n play or bassinet until you move into your new house, a crib takes up a lot of room and PnP/bassenet's are compact, but still plenty big for a newborn.
Wow, sorry, didn't mean to write a novel.
Welcome to the board and congrats! I'm a first time mom too- almost 16 weeks :-)
First of all, I recommend the book Baby Bargains - you can buy at Walmart or purchase online: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1889392332/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=1889392146&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1QGRA2GP5QVETBBD0K5A
It will tell you what is necessary (and when), brand recommendations, and idea of prices.
Good luck on selling your house!
I'm 16 weeks and haven't bought a thing--don't worry!! Babies don't need a ton of stuff at first, and you'll have time.
The one thing I have started doing is perusing the reviews on amazon.com and BabiesRUs for basic stuff (car seats, cribs, swing, bath and changing stuff), and saving stuff to my shopping list so I can come back to it.
I've also gotten the registry questions, and I know things go out of season/stock at all the places, so I'm in no hurry. My to do list includes so many other things right now, too.
Wishing you a smooth move,
It's really a matter of personal preference. We had a cosleeper and used it only for a week or two- having him in room got me no sleep b/c every grunt, moan, etc would wake me. The best thing we did was have him in his crib in his own room from the start. Obviously that isn't an option since you are moving.
In your situation I would use a PNP for now until you move, silly to buy a crib without the furniture set if you are looking at the convertibles s/he can use for years. It would be better to pick the pieces and order it all at once. You could do a bassinet as well, but it is really a personal preference for you.

Whatever you do...do not have the baby sleep in bed with you. It increases risk of SIDS!!
If you don't have room for a crib, the co-sleeper is a great idea b/c it will lay flush with your bed, but will still keep the baby out of your actual bed. I've read that a lot of mom use the bassinet feature on the pack n play, so that is also an option.
THIS, too! The book is amazing!
Thank you everyone for the advice. I knew that having the babby sleep in the bed with you was a "bad" thing to do, which is why I was asking for more options. My bed is kinda full anyway between my husband, dog, cats and I.
I have plenty of room for a crib and that is what I was originally planning to do but didn't want to jump the gun on buying such a big item. Expecially when a co-sleepers and cribs seem so much alike.
