I'm a bit torn with this. I took it out and while he was awake it was fine, lots of head support on his own, but then when I saw him fall asleep, it was entirely too much chin to chest slouching action, so I put it back in. It doesn't seem to bother him and he is over 15lbs and 24+ inch long.
We still have the head support in as well. He is doing really well with it but he also still leans to one side or another when he sleeps. It doesn't seem to bother him so I am going to leave it in a bit longer.
I still have the head support in there. DD instantly falls asleep when I put the car in gear. I took the head support out recently and without the head support her head falls foward so I put it back on.
From miscarriages, a diagnosis of a bicornuate uterus, and fibroid removal surgery...It's been quite the journey but it was all well worth it.
I also took both out around 3 months, but I have a "chunky" baby. She was really uncomfortable, and the supports were squeezing her shoulders and thighs. Poor thing hated her car seat until I took them out.

The instruction manual says to take the newborn insert out when they get to 11 lbs. So we did, but kept the head support in. And also moved it and the shoulder straps up a notch.
