Ice cream and egg yolks?

I know this might have been asked...but is it safe to eat ice cream made with egg yolks? Not all ice cream has it listed, but the two containers in my freezer (Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia and Creme Brulee) both have egg yolks as ingredients.

It seems obvious, but maybe I am missing something?

Re: Ice cream and egg yolks?

  • Pretty sure it's cooked before it's frozen. I think it's fine. Guessing that eating the cookie dough raw is frowned upon then.... cause I do that sometimes :)

But as a chef I can tell you most ice creams are cooked ahead of time, and if not they tend to be pasteurized.  Ice creams in the traditional sense are supposed to be cooked before they are frozen, I wouldn't worry about it.  If it was raw eggs you would hear about people getting sick from the ice creams, not to mention (this latest recall aside) only 1 in 30,000 eggs in the US have salmonella.

  • Food in the US is pasturized.  Eat.
