Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Need advice please re: waking at night

DD was a pretty solid sleeper. She goes to bed on the late side, around 10 (although we're trying to adjust that) and wakes up around 6 or so. She hadn't eaten overnight for about 2 months until 2 nights ago. Anyway, whether it's wakeful or teething, she's been up most nights recently, for what seems like much of the night.

She never cries, but will whine/moan or just babble. We don't go in when she's babbling and only if she's whining for a while and doesn't seem like she's able to go back to sleep.

This may sound stupid, but I assume she'd cry if she was hungry rather than just moan/whine. So, I haven't nursed her except for 2 nights ago when DH tried to move her out of the corner of the crib and flat out woke her up and she cried and cried.

I don't want to ignore her if she needs to eat, but also don't want to nurse her and develop a habit if it's not necessary. I'm going to get rid of the nightlight in there in case it's bothering her but am feeling clueless otherwise.

  • That sounds like 4 month wakeful.  I see you are bf - have you started with cereal yet?  When DD started waking up that was the first thing I did was make sure I gave her a little more formula in her last bottle of the night in case she was hungry - she drank it all but still gets fussy.  Last night she started whimpering but when I went to her room to check on her she was still asleep, she just wanted her paci and quieted right down after.  You pretty much have to do trial and error.  When DD was going through wakeful I was up 8-9 times a night!

  • DD (now 1) would always do the same thing at night around that age but unless she started to cry we would ignore her and she'd eventually go back to sleep. I felt the same way you do - I didn't want to start a bad habit by going in there and having her think "oh, if I whine or babble they'll come get me" ;)

    She eventually outgrew it.

  • Thanks for posting this because this has been occurring to us as well.  She had been sleeping about 9/10 hours at night until about a week ago when she only sleeps 6 or 7 before waking up to babble and play.  I was going through the same questioning of is she hungry or not?  Now that we have moved her to her own room (as of last night) I know that I can just let her play herself back to sleep.
